According to an article on Domain Investing, Zalmi Duchman, the founder of FreshDiet.com used the domain name TheFreshDiet.com for his startup.

The acquisition cost for the EMD FreshDiet.com was $20,000 when the startup was in nascent stage. As the startup grew, so did the price of the domain name.
The founder ended up acquiring the domain name for a hefty price later!

Well, I do agree that it turns out to be a liability in case of startups.
How far do you agree?

I think you should always strive to get the best domain possible for your business in the very beginning.
Buying later can cost a lot more in the long run, and there is no guarantee you will ever own it.
The domain could also change hands in the meantime (from one reseller to another), thus the price can increase significantly. You snooze, you lose - I have personally experienced this a couple times.

The bottom line is that start-ups must be funded adequately, that includes budget for a good domain (that is a form of stationary).

More and more, entrepreneurs now secure the domain name before they incorporate under their chosen name.
This is what I do.

This is an interesting concept, considering the Alphabet.xyz scenario too. Sucks for Google that BMW won't give up the .com lol.

Agree with everything Kate says. If someone owns the name you want, it will always cost you!

I plain lucked out with my most wanted name; by pure luck, I was able to snag synerji [dot] com for mid $$ at GD auction.

I had been yearning for this name for at least six months...

I was sure that someone was going to bid it way up.

But I also didn't blab around that I was hankering for this domain, and I didn't query the former owner.

I had pretty much decided on another name (synji, syneji, and synaji were the alternate contenders).

from this video is possible to see another point of view, from another successful entrepreneur, to the question post in this thread.
There are many business that do not care about the domain name and they do good same.
A risky invest could bring high benefit but if things go bad, you could be screwed

For Staff.com, we actually interviewed over one hundred people and we actually got them to see which domain names they could remember and write down .. there are a lot of domains out there that maybe the person things that they are good or clever or whatever, but you cannot actually remember it or you cannot write it down or spell. It is very, very hard to spell... One person needs to say oh, did you hear about this site, and the other person hears about it. They remember it. They write it down. They type it in the search engine five days later. So, we actually got about 15 domain names in a short list and then what we did is we got a video where we actually recorded those domain names in twice. Just basically said Staff.com, MyStaff.com, and Recruitment.com, and all of these different domains that we had as a possibility. And then I showed that video to literally over one hundred people, and then a few minutes later, asked them to write down what did you remember.
