Not new to online business and domains, but new to making a living with domains

I have been working with E-Commerce and SEO for some time now, as well as domains have been a hobby for years, but I am interested in possibly finding a path into working independently and make a consistent living with domains, consulting, or through a mixture of tactics. I am still employed as a GM of an E-Commerce site, but would like to go independent and possibly wean away managing operations of E-Commerce companies - which is unstable longevity wise.

As I read more, I know I am entering more on the down curve of domaining or the domain market in general, but I am genuinely interested in domains and feel I have enough experience behind me to support me moving forward.

Question I have is whether domain flipping of new domains is still any bit relevant, especially after the multiple Google updates? Also, I would appreciate any suggestions or tips on areas that could possibly make a decent living. Please note that I am not asking the unoriginal question that I have seen posted on here where people ask how to make money selling domains, but more so how can someone make a living working with domains - and maybe its other than just buying/selling, parking, affiliate marketing, building them out, etc.

I have already started researching quite a bit and will diving deep into this forum to learn more, but I would appreciate any or all advice...or even mentors... as I try to build something out for myself and build a successful independent living.

This a passion of mine and I have yet to try and work with it fully. I know a lot of you on here share the same feeling and felt there is no better group of people to ask than on here.

Thank you! I am open to PMs or responses on here!

Domain flipping would be for long time, Google is not able to affect it, it is all your experience, knowledge how you handle domain name business.

Thank you ProSence. The only reason I mentioned Google's updates was more do to newer domains/brands or keyword domains being more difficult to push than before the penguin update.

Is there any suggestions of domain markets to stay away from? Any specific sites to stay away selling on...ie. GoDaddy Auctions vs Flippa vs Sedo vs selling to end users?

Are there any suggested programs to use to analyze domains? I am aware of multiple expiring/deleted name sources, domaintools, opensiteexplorer, and obviously using adwords keyword tool.

Thank you!

Domain name selling, buying requires creativity, experience and knowledge as well. A $10 worth domain can be sold in x,xxx if it is meaningful to other end user, so basically, you need to find who wants this domain name then you are going to earn much profit........

Buying domains from one auction site and selling it to other auction site may not give you much profit..

Thank you. I agree on the buying and selling from other auction sites, though I am pretty sure some people get away with some buys. I was more asking about places to stay away from when selling domains. I tried selling three domains as a test on GoDaddy (each with mixed features/addons) and one through Flippa with no success. Granted the names werent the best names I had, but I figured they would get some attention. It just seemed I got little or no exposure on either.

Thank you again. I have been reading religiously since I joined last Wednesday. I really want to make something out of this, and want/need to learn as soon as possible. I have been working in and around online business since 2002, and though I am a newbie to capitalizing on tactics this site proposes for success, I at least have background knowledge behind me.

Thank you!

I personally do not think there is consistent money to be made in the domain business unless you are a registrar. =P

Where I believe you can make a consistent income is in the content side of things... developed sites sell, and there is value there, and money that can be generated on a consistent basis, without having to start from scratch every time you sell one domain.

Ie... forums, blogs. Passionate about the topic, income generated. You do not see a forum basically being deleted after a few years to start again... while yes, there are folks who sell their forums then start another... your business sense should tell you there is more money to be made in keeping the forum for the cash flow.

cash flow is king.

What you have to decide is... do you want to sell cars to limo companies... or do you want to be the limo company who buys the car and makes money from it.

maksimfa,

what type of income do you think is realistic for someone entering the market, to someone who is seasoned, and up to obviously becoming like people who share their stories of success on here?

I believe in the possibility of a mix of multiple cash gaining opportunities, whether it is selling domains, parking, services/consulting, or like you said by focusing on building out content sites. I tried taking the content step towards the E-commerce market path, but this has been full of headaches and inconsistencies, mainly through the roles I assume of floundered sites (though I wasnt told they were floundering when I was offered a position). I guess I have just not fully understood the financial value or how to get financial value out of solely content based sites. Unfortunately, with many I have learned under or worked with, their focus has been E-Commerce and never said it was worth the time for sole content sites as it took too long to pay anything to look at or just took too much time for the money produced.

Do you have any thoughts or tips for me? You can private message me as well.

Thank you!
