this may seem like a silly question ... but, i really am having a hard time getting a reasonable amount of traffic coming to my rather large and costly portfolio of mainly first time regs ...

my question is ,

does it simply take hours upon hours of computer time, putting links out there , submitting to search engines and directories, visiting forums etc to build traffic

or

is there something else that i am missing because no matter what i do the traffic only improves slightly ... all i really want is to have a click a day per site and then i could break even

Are you sure that the above math works out? One click per day?

Traffic, per se, can come from many sources ... type-in's, links, S/E's, Forum signatures, and some of the others you've mentioned, IMHO. Naturally, these types of things will help your traffic stats at (wherever they are parked presently).
There are other ways to get "traffic", as well ... but most reputable parking services are HiP to the types that would generate "fake" traffic and/or attempt to manipulate the terms of the parking service(s) and payouts.
If these are "mainly first time regs" ... chances are, they won't have a lot of type-in, natural traffic potential IMHO. I've noticed that even some cursory development - as well as S/E placement and exchanging liks with like-minded sites - has improved my traffic and click-through's, in general.
All the best!

I think one thing you can defently do is add a link in your footer for forums like this. I cant imagen youll have a chance to advertise to more people intrested in domains then right here.

yup

thanks CJ , re the math ... if there are 365 days in the year and reg fee is about $8 usd then 1 click of 2 cents or more per day would give me $7.30 which would just about cover it ...

i guess i am just frustrated because i believe the above is possible but getting there takes awhile and i have only a short test period on which to base any assumptions of what effects my attempts are having ... i have been listing sites here and there but i need to get more efficient, maybe i need to develop a list of submission pages and do each site one by one

one of the thoeries i am working on is that of linking my own sites to eachother because if links are good and i have a mess of sites then in theory i can boost my linkpop substantially by linking my related sites ...

99% of my domains are also first-time regs and we're basically in the same boat... CoolJeff, being cool, knows whereof he speaks.. ;)

Thanks, but truly, if it wasn't for RJ ... I wouldn't know much, in all candor!
I pick up bits and pieces every day, and so I humbly try to build upon that ... :gl:

:notme:

PS. Same ... have you even tinkered with Google Adsense (for your "developed", linked sites)? Of course, we're going a bit beyond simple "Domain Parking" here, but I think there may be more upside with your domains by going the development, targeted eyeballs route IMHO. I also saw a thread, here in the Advertising Forum I believe, regarding "Exchanging Links", as well.

:) now thats dedication..... Detectives never sleep... :)

Ok, first of all, without knowing to what list of names you refer, any comments can only be hyperthetical.

The regged dates of the domains are also important.

e.g. I have sites launched in feb last year with a worse listing than sites launched in Nov. I also have url-redirect domains with better listings than the actual site it directs to. so there is no real formula with regard the engines.

For a very basic, quick fix of your problem, create a very, very, basic site saying something along the lines of 'this domain might be for sale' and offer either some adsense stuff or ads relevant to your domains name/s. Affiliate links can also be fun and you retain control of content.

Then redirect all your domains to that site.

On the site, embed back links to your domains. Also embed relevant search phrases, achieve this by searching overture for relevant search phrases and meta tag these or 'funnily enough for the best fix' actualy write these phrases / comments into the home page content. very soon (a day or so) googlebot etc will find you.

You can also buy 10k of real hits for about $20. While this normally achieves very little business, it does get you noticed by the search engines...

your web stats will then show you where the traffic is coming from, which domains are getting traffic and on and on...

good luck

any others ...

Great tips, i am building up to the point where i use a template that is being designed for me

i am pretty sure that once i put the main category sites up using the template . i will be able to then promote those better as they will have much more relevant content contained in multiple pages with links back to each respective group of sites in every category ... sports will be developed and baseball, basketball etc .. will remain basic ppc pages

once i do all the category main sites i hope the users feel like staying, the idea of being able to get traffic coming in to my network of sites and then seeing that traffic bounce around within really makes me smile

from what i can see ... search engines are picky ... but people are even more demanding
