Is it me, or are the only people asking for NDAs the people that are copying other sites? I have yet to have someone with an NDA have an idea that has not been done a thousand times. Then after all the hassle you end up having signed an NDA, half the time, for a job that thousands of people already have done.

Is there even a single unique idea out there anymore? I miss the challenges of the early days of the web, to be honest.

Just making conversation I guess:)

There are still unique ideas, but people want to feel special by making others sign NDAs. It's an ego booster for them, although usually pointless.

I use NDAs when I need to take on 3rd party help developing something. I don't want the 3rd party stealing my IP before I can even take it to market.

Generally speaking, I'd say NDAs are a little overkill, but when there's a large amount of money to be made on a good idea, it's better to be safer than sorry.

I agree, it is major overkill and `mholt` hit the nail on the head, it is about ego. If someone wants to steal your stuff, an NDA will not protect you. Unless you are going to spend $50,000 USD in legal fees at least.

Now for really original and "good" ideas, I suggest strict security and hiring local. Then you can beat the crap out of the A-hole that steals your idea. lol A lot can be done with a baseball bat.

One customer I have, which does have a killer idea, never asked for one. But, we have worked together in the past. I think that testing the waters by having people do small jobs first and testing them is a great start. Good security though is key. Heck these guys thought of everything. Packet sniffing and all. lol Even the Dev wiki uses SSL.
