Hi Australia, do you mind sharing the offers you got? I got an offer for sa.tv for $ 15,000 last year (reg fee 400/year), which I refused, especially because of the relative low reg fee.

Hi John, 'dvd' will sell for not less than $20K or will die with me :)
'videos' did not get a single serious offer, no panic as I am not worried about its great potential.

Australia, nice offers you got, but with those names if .tv really picks up you will be in the driver seat. I only got one serious offer as mentioned above and a few interest (no offers) in lesser names like korting.tv (means discount in Holland) and for some reason nugget.tv.

Argos, your videos is better than dvd, you should not let it go below 50k, but thats IMO.

From what I know:

- online.tv bought something like 4,000 premium names at the peak of the bubble
- tried to set up a series of ad-driven vertical portal (online.tv)
- spent $3M
- was not successful at generating revenue, had to shut down, and is slowly liquidating his domain portfolio

it is not at all a bad idea, except for the fact that he probably:

a) overpaid for the names (www.tv's premium pricing was higher then it is now, I believe)

b) underinvested in the portal development, traffic generation and advertising. I did not see the site back in 2000, but if it is as it is now, it is very basic. Currently it is an out-of-date homepage with the names themselves parked at what looks to be domainspa. One would think that even with a few thousand dollars, it could be cleaned up and improved while waiting to sell the domains.

c) was about 5 years too early for .tv to realistically be used for multimedia

d) caught up in the peak of the .com bubble and subsequent collapse of the internet ad market

I would love to know if anyone has more info about this story...

I agree bought too many too early.

That is of course unless he/she has some serious capital backing and is wait it out.

Moreover the project was too greedy and ambitious...

It was more of a monopoly scheme than anything else. I am fascinated with the mistakes made by online.tv.

Dare I say it I also think that a lack of imagination was to blame.

The odds are .TV domains have sold. IMHO, it would be a statistical anomally for no (reported) .Tv domains to sell in a two month period, especially with a hot online Tv market.

Chances are, dnjournal -in its revised chart listing schema for 2006, is excluding .TV from its reports... reflecting a (domainer) dislike for verisign and the view that .tv is not a "domainer extension" (not to mention a look-down-the-nose opinion of .Tv'ers many in the "old boy" domainer network have).

Perhaps I am wrong, but one will not find so much as a mention of .TV in dnjournal this year. Even in the Outlook for 2006 article there is no mention of .tv despite all the online, and mobile, tv activity thats taking place. Even when he quotes Rick Schwartz saying...

"The other parallel is with TV and the enormous growth it has had during the past 50 years. It is stunning when you combine these two elements and the reason I have always been so bullish about domain names. I try to envision how things will look when the net is fully developed. โ€œWOWโ€ is the word that keeps coming to mind. The net is becoming the center of the universe for the average person." the writer does not throw in a line about an undeniable increase in .tv domain name sales.

I think, especially since one can find more listings of .TV sales in this forum than in dnjournal... that we are being snubbed. Correct me if I am wrong sir duke. Tell me there is no bias against .Tv. Then explain why you have not even mentioned where .tv fits into your new listing schema.

From dnjournal 2006:

"Before we start our sales round up, let me alert you to some other big changes that we are introducing this week. The domain sales charts have been reorganized and expanded, prompting us to move to a new two page format. As I noted above, the Big Board is now a Top 20 list that features the highest sales, regardless of extension. A new Global Contenders Top 20 chart and a Country Codes Top 10 list also make their debuts this week.

The Global Contenders chart will give the non .com global extensions .net, .org, .biz and .info a stage of their own. .Com normally dominates the top chart which overshadows the healthy sales activity that is also being enjoying by the other gTLD's as the domain market continues to broaden. The new list will allow you to better track trends in all parts of the business. That is also why we are rolling out the new Country Codes chart which will list the top sales among the ccTLD's like Germany's popular .de, the United Kingdom's rapidly growing .co.uk and America's emerging .us extension. The two new charts also allow us to retire our old New TLD chart and move .biz, .info and .us to the proper categories alongside their older siblings."

One would think, from reading dnjournal 2006, that .tv does not even exist.
"I tell ya... we get no respect! :)

Very odd argument.

There was also "the .tv king" who spent quite a few million on .tv domains around 2001 (buying from the registry and other domainers), as a far as I know most of his names weren't renewed.

It would be interesting to see what DNJournal chart .tv names are placed on in the re-org. I think in the past, they were put on the .com chart (of all places...)

First off I certainly am pro .tv but DUKE is of the hiighest ethics, .tv would be placed in the cctld section with .us, .de,.co.uk and people report to DUKE there have been no sales on Afternic or SEDO. I would think there have been some private sales but nothing anyone wants published in Domain Sales.

nice discussion guys...

"no .tv sales this year so far"... So what! and i mean that with the greatest of respect to everyone here - I wouldnt care less in none were sold throughout the entire year.

Long haul is long haul.... .TV might end up a lame duck. But then so to might .com. But in my humble opinion, .TV stands a much better chance than any .org, .anything.

As broadband speeds increase to that nearing digital television and static web pages become less and less "the norm", .TV is well placed to become the extension of choice.

But as ever, Im sure the regular naysayers will have the usual comments to make on this but again, so what, as if i care what someone less qualified than me has to say on my investment when, at the end of the day, its just an opinion
