Okay I am thinking about taking a more serious look at domain buying/selling. When I first came to this site I was like (I assume) most newcomers thinking you could make a quick £££ and regged some stupid domains and know these were mistakes.

I have been doing a lot more reading now however and am considering investing a little more money into buying something decent that stands a chance of a good return.

My questions would be:

1. For a newbie how much cash would you advise to start with? I know this could be "how long is a piece of string" type question. But as a bottom line how much would I have to put up to stand a chance of getting any decent domains that could make a return?

2. Is hand-regging domains a definite no-no?

3. Are expired/dropped domains the way I should go?

Basically, any information you can offer would be appreciated. I'm pretty serious about doing this properly and don't want to have a load of crap domains that are a waste of money.

I know a lot of you do this is more than a hobby, and therefore I respect the fact that not everyone will want to help newbies.

Thanks for reading, all responses greatly appreciated.

Hi Silentg thanks for that. I've already read your thread and it is very useful- thank you.

How much money would you say a newbie needs to put up to get started?

To make a return from dropping domains is it simply a matter of sifting through the lists day in day out until you find one that jumps out at you?

Thanks

Edit: gave you rep for your thread in signature :)

Here's what I do on SnapNames & NameJet:
Go into advanced search and select the TLDS and cctlds you want and do a quick search. Then sort them by number of bids. And start with names with 1 bid and see if you can find any gems in there.

What are gems: Dictionary terms, 4 Letter .com, Keyword domains (1 or 2 or 3). If it's keyword domains then do a search on Google Keywords Tool to find the number of exact matches. If it's more than 1,000 then it's good.

I sticked with .com/.net/and .org when I started out.

Hmm ok thanks for the input :) At snap names is it possible to go directly to the ones with 1 bid? Or do you just go through the pages until you're at 1 bids

Hi Nayfee,

Welcome to NP! :)

1. I would advise that you start off with one or two names and build your way up, learning as you go without spending too much money at once.

2. Hand-registering is okay for the right domains or to get started.

3. Expired/Dropped domains can be good too.

4. Sort the bid column to see how many bids.

You can set the min. bid $ amount when you do search and it'll show you the domains with 1 bid or just go to the page until 1 bid and go from there.

You think I should invest a small amount in 1 decent domain at auction, then try and wait until I've sold it or had interest in it until I get another?

It's difficult to know what/how to start with. :)

Just fix a budget and work with that. Don't go over the budget. Sell the ones you bought before moving onto another purchase.

Is one way to go...

Okay, I will start searching through auctions, dropped domain lists etc. until I find a domain I want to buy and think is worth the purchase.

Well, if you ask me, I like Namepros, Sedo and eBay places for buying and selling web sites.
