New gTLD .BERLIN - 31,644 19/March/2014

Looks like .BERLIN opened strong this moring with 31644 .berlin domains in the zone file (31,645 including the TLD name). That does put some of the other new gTLDs in the shade and if this new registration volume is sustained for a few days, it could see it overtake .GURU and .PHOTOGRAPHY very quickly.

Yep. It seems to be closer to a ccTLD than a gTLD with a lot of local style domains in the mix. My German isn't that good but some of the patterns are quite different to some of the other ngTLDs.

I think the Geos will do pretty well among end users.

It sounds as though many of them will be restricted to local use, thus pretty much cutting out domainers -- which is the way it ought to be.

From what I've read, they're free to Germans first year. I read 1&1 is doing that for those in Germany/Austria, don't know about others. That would help the numbers. Read some other stuff about usage within the first year. Don't know what constitutes usage, if a parked page fulfills that or not.

Yep. I mentioned that on Domain Name Wire and it seems that the clause is written so loosely that it does not really make clear what usage means. It could even be as simple as the domain being used for e-mail. It does make a specific reference to web content being relevent to the registration terms. What is remarkable is the relatively low number of domains on sedoparking.com (though sometimes registrars can park undeveloped domains with some Javascript from Sedo).

This morning's count is 36,052.

I actually think this gTLD will be used.

Germans love their ccTLD (.de), and I suspect they will love their city TLDs as well.

I don't have any, and I don't have any plans to reg these.

The .BERLIN zonefile has been stuck at 20140526 for some days now. Perhaps this morning's zonefile will be up to date. The problem with some of the new gTLD stats is that the registries do not update the zonefiles so the figures may not move for days and then one day will show a very large increase. The count for yesterday morning (20140531 but the 20140526 zonefile) was 47475.
