New Domain Prefixes - Will it ever happen?

You know how everything is www. now? Well do you think there will ever be something different, like sss. or something?

I opened a site recently in chinese and it redirected to a site staring with mms:
I could not understand how could they run a complete website with mms which I guess is for WMV movies. Strange. Did not probe further.

The www. is actually a subdomain. The http protocol is relatively new. Domains existed before there were "webpages", and "www" was introduced as a way to access port 80 on a server.

People that "were there" before the web know what I mean .

PS: You can have a subdomain like "vvv.domain.com" or anything you like.

"www." is pretty much obsolete already. Notice most mainstream advertisements are now simply giving the domain name without it. The www is implied.

it could be a subdomain redirected to domain.com and www.domain.com redirected to mms.domain.com :imho:

i don't think so, www means "worldwide web" and with cpanel nowadays you can setup unlimited subdomains in your account and multiple redirects and even www can be redirected to another subdomains like what i do on http://freedns.afraid.org (not my site) so it will be unncecessary.

Actually, if it started like this:

mms://

It means it's a protocol, like FTP://, HTTP://, etc.

I don't think that putting something instead of www will be a good move. Or even a move at all.
