Oh man, I want to go. Except, I don't have $3000 to drop for a seminar... Eh, I've only spent 1/3 of that amount on domain names so far as it is in the last 9 months.

Its exciting to see domain industry establishing itself as a legitimate business entity...however, for me personally, the real excitement would happen when such trade shows start having some measurable focus on the non-.com tlds as well...since so far, its just all about .com.

I will be speaking at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East and new extensions is one of the topics slated for discussion.

From the Thursday itinerary:

2 P.M. - Seminar - features Ron Jackson of DNJournal.com who will speak on current trends in domain sales, price increases for good domains, types of domains that are increasing in value, future of typo domains, .com vs other extensions and other topics.

I will also be part of Sedo.com's seminar Friday morning at 11. They sell more new TLD's than anyone so there is a good chance the subject will come up there as well.

Great !! Its a start but hopefully things will spiral up from here on. Thanks Ron for stepping up. I honestly believe you have single-handedly done more good for the new tlds than all the other domainers, registeries and registrars combined....Freebie promotion by Afilias being the only other thing coming to mind....jury still out on that one whether it did any good or not!

When I came into the domain business in May 2002, I didn't know much about this business, but my experience in previous businesses (including media and how it had morphed over the years) told me internet growth would not only support but require the opening and acceptance of new channels (domain extensions). While the majority advised sticking to .com I ignored the advice even though much of it came from people I respect who had made fortunes in that extension.

It seemed clear to me that the reason they made fortunes is they recognized an opportunity before anyone else did and they reaped the benefits of their foresight. However, I believe the .com window of opportunity has essentially closed for newcomers (unless you enter the business already in possession of an enormous bankroll). If you want to duplicate their success my belief is that you must find your own window of opportunity. When you do you will reap the benefits and then that window will close because, as in .com, so many others will rush in to try to copy your success rather than create their own. Of course they will also be too late.

I believe you can make money in just about all extensions. There are always pockets of opportunity. But the greatest success is usually realized by those who look beyond today, see what is coming tomorrow and seize that opportunity before others do. It has always surprised me that so few people have the ability (or willingness) to look ahead.
