New at DNJournal: Is Domain Leasing The Next Big Thing? Also, ICA Names Exec Director

For years now the primary options for domain monetization have been to park your names and rely on pay per click revenue, develop your names and run ads from networks like Google AdSense or Yahoo Publisher (or sell space directly to advertisers) or to sell the domains for a profit. Leasing domains has also been an option but due to the intricacies of contract negotiations and the legwork required to match advertisers with appropriate domains, it is something that only a handful of domain owners have tried.

That may be about to change. With the launch of a new site at LeaseThis.com Friday (Jan. 19) company founders say their platform (based on patent pending technology) will make leasing as easy as domain parking and far more profitable. If it pans out, having another easy to implement method of monetization could bring even more attention from domain name investors and increase the value of your portfolio. Launch of LeaseThis.com Gives Domain Owners a New Option for Domain Monetization

DN Journal's Janauary newsletter has also gone out to our email subscribers. The lead item is about the Internet Commerce Association's selection of its first Executive Director. The ICA is a new non-profit organization jointly founded by several major domain industry companies to protect the rights and assets of domain registrants. In the past I've tried leasing domain names but it doesn't seem like anyone wants to go through with it. I don't know, maybe my domains weren't good enough for anyone to even want to lease, but I know I gave it as an option anytime I was about to sell a domain but no one was interested in it. Maybe it's the new thing and will catch on? I just know from personal experience I never had any luck with leasing any of my domains - just selling them.

Nice article, the whole domain leasing trend has been a bit interesting as of late.

Excellent article, specially about new ways of monetizing.

Domain leasing was tried in the past but legal issues were always an impediment. Hope they could eliminate that.

Thanks for sharing.

With the rising prices of premium domains, this sounds like a great alternative to purchasing domains. Does anyone feel this will have a negative impact on the sales market, though?

I like it and after the bugs are worked out I think it will be a boon for domains.

I aslo hope the owners go after publicity for it as that will build credibilty for the domain business.

We can use all the positive media help we can get in this industry. I am tired of the media playing on the cyber squatter angle and other negative aspects that smear this profession.

If mainstream companies jump on board with this, and I think they will, the domain industry will soar.

For instance I have a domain name I feel is valuable, californiarealestate.la, if I get accepted I will offer to lease that domain. Now if a high class real estate agent or company who sells real estate to the wealthy and to stars in La, lease this domain they will gain a benefit.

That benefit will be having a high profile domain as the heading to their ads, instead of just having a website they registered that does not "speak" to the in crowd.

Why do that? They may have built up a good amount of traffic to their site such as "katies Real Estate" and that is good, but if Katie is persuing the high priced real estate market in Los Angeles, she will do better with my name, californiarealestate.la

What I like the most is after Katie or a client uses the lease program and sees a benefit from leasing my name, maybe I will receive a offer from her or a jealous Real Estate firm in California.

Thats what I talk about going after the end user, in this case the end user is any business. What can be bigger in scope than that?

With the COO of Trafficz, Ammar Kubba on board, I am very confidant this will fly.

Ha, all the auction houses missed this one. Sitting on millions of domains and not looking to get end users to use those names has been the a bad strike for domain owners.

My support for this is 100%.

I doubt leasing will work for anything but url bar type-in coms that get decent traffic. It might heat up domain sales of brandables and site titles as well as alternative extensions as a secondary impact though. Hope so.

I guess it is a new avenue of potential revenue.

It may or may not take off, but what have domainers got to lose from it?

Will be very interesting to see whats happens.

Great find Duke.

Well they are out there shaking hands and making a splash. So the energy behind it is good. I like situations like that.

I think it willl gain more attention as word gets out. I see most were asking around $20. a month. A few domains were commanding over two thousand dollars per month to rent.

What to do if you have a domain thats parked at lets say Fabulous and earns good ppc?. Do you start pulling those winning race horses for a run on the website?. Might be no income for months, until a advertiser comes in to rent the domain.

I have signed up and will jump on board with it. I'll go slow, maybe a few domains. If they bring home the trophy (cash) I will open the gates.

You leave it parked at Fabulous. As noted in the article, your domains listed at LeaseThis.com remain parked until they are leased (and at the PPC provider of your choice), so it looks like there is nothing at all to lose.
