What do people think of me buying a netbook, loaded with Windows, and putting Linux Opensuse over it? Or some other version of Linux?

Linux takes less to run, and I think it would be the right thing to do for a netbook, but I might keep Windows until I need to reformat or something.

Post your thoughts here :)

I'm not sure what you'd be looking to do on Linux -- I run pdaXii13 on a 400mhz Xscale Sharp Zaurus C3100 and it works fine for me as a pda for what normally amounts to basic web browsing (Dillo is a surprisingly fast web browser) and document creation. Linux should work great - especially if your netbook doesn't run on Atom! :)

you can buy quite a few netbooks with some type of linux already installed. Of course, if your harddisk size isn't a problem there's no reason why you can't install linux and have a dual boot netbook.

I had an hp2133 which was seriously underpowered but Vista worked reasonably well on it. After a while I made it dualboot with XP and that proved to be a real improvement. For stability, speed and user friendliness I prefer XP over any Linux distro or Vista.

I have tried a lot of linux versions but never got enough out of it and always ran into problems with things like installing the graphics drivers. I learned computing in the dos era and disliked windows for a long time. After many years working on windows reluctantely, I caved in and now I just can't get used to something else.

I'm currently running my laptop with dual boot windows (vista) / linux (ubuntu).

There's no reason you couldn't do the same on a netbook, but frankly I'd recommend getting yourself a copy of XP Pro and running that. ( reason: i hate the vista, and ubuntu corrupts my usb drives )

I have a HP2133 to. It ships with Opensuse, also available with win xp or vista. Usually Linux is more than enough and you won't waste money in another windows license...

my worry with the netbook is the contract that you will be locked in for 2 years, and the service will be locked in with the OS , so if you change to linux, etc.. then you may have trouble with your service (not sure on that -need to ask someone who tried it) and its SMALL

you don't have to buy a service ... you can simply have it for wifi access or if you already have an aircard

I am getting just a netbook for around the house and out and about. I don't plan on getting service for it through Verizon or AT&T or anything
