A friend of mine recently reinstalled Windows after getting a virus. Why do Windows users cheerfully reinstall the OS and lose everything, usually multiple times? I would hate having to do that. The ironic thing is, back when I used only Windows, I considered it 'maintenance', much like running a virus scan or defragmenting the harddrive and didn't complain either.
Switching to Linux a few months ago has really given me a new perspective of some of the things Windows users consider normal - defragmenting, virus scans, reinstallation, even rebooting... All unneccesary under Linux!

You must be one of the lucky few :p
I think XP is Microsoft's best OS, I haven't tried Vista, but I have heard stories...

I had to reinstall Windows every 6 months because it would lose the ability to boot.

In my 8 years of running Windows, Ive never had to reformat, and when my friends would, I brought over my external HD to copy their important files over :)

I've been told Vista Ultimate runs perfectly with 8GB of RAM. No thanks, I think I'll stick to my laptop and have the same graphical effects enabled but using only 300MB of RAM.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 Beta. It works pretty good, some problems, but that is to be expected with a beta release.

I want to switch to Linux so bad. I've had enough of Microsoft and Windows. I can't switch though because of a number of apps that simply won't run on Linux. Hopefully soon.

Like what? There are open-source replacements for pretty much everything.
