Net losing ground to Org?

After watching some recent drop sales and noticing the change in tone, I am seeing that .NET domains are not nearly as popular as they have been in the past. In the LLL arena, NET have improved only 100% in the past 3 years as ORG have improved 150% and COM have improved by 200%. Is there a general drop in interest in NETs? Clearly some of this is changed by recent usage of ORG as infromative sites with strong rank validity by Google at lesser price than similar NET names. Also the overall strength of COM and tendency for global internet users to flock to the primary TLD is perhaps putting a drag on the NET market.

I have recently picked up some very good .NETs that should have garnered bids but were simply overlooked by the masses. I am not implying that NET is going the way of BIZ, but I do see overall downtrend as having a much larger impact.

I am basing these remarks off the data in http://www.chartname.com/name-charts/monthly-charts anyone is free to verify the information I have plotted and voice their thoughts.

I think you are on to something. One thing that may be a factor is all the new extensions we may see in the coming years. I can only image if something like the .web becomes a reality, the .net would take a huge hit. The .org is nice because it has that "trust" factor built into it, and it is gaining broader acceptance.

I think it is more a rise in .org than a decline in .net

.Org has many uses that people have only recently realized.
.NET is still one of the most popular extensions in the rest of the world, including most of Asia.

I have been buying .ORG for years and think the future is bright. However, some type of names just don't fit in .ORG

.NET has a credibility that will remain, but in general the value is keyword related. Domains with a clear use in .NET will always have value.

Brandables work much better in .COM than .NET though.

.ORG is good for many reasons including that they work in virtually any language. For instance a Spanish medical term in .org would be as good or better than .net

But, a domain like BuyComputers.org just does not fit. Out of all the extensions .ORG probably takes the most research to understand what works and why.

The two quotes above really sum up my mixed feelings on the .org vs .net.

Within the past few months, my sales have been predominantly Geo and generic .ORG's ... the highest of these to a Geo CREDIT UNION who preferred my (non ™ ) .ORG to even the one they were presently using! They wanted it ... to the tune of $3,500 "Quick Sale" (the check arrived within 3 business days and upon receipt I immediately pushed it to their ownership). :talk:
This entity would have had zero interest in the respective .NET.

I've always struggled with .NET's, on the other hand ... my last sale was for mid $Xxx and it was a very VERY GOOD solid "Career" domain name, IMHO. :music:

In summary, End users want and seek ... great .ORG's! :imho:

It's interesting to see the general consensus so far, which somewhat validates a few auction experiences I've had. The statement about ORGs being targeted I think is very important. It would surprise me that anyone would overlook the fact that SaveEarth.org is a great domain but BuyViagra.org is a great deprecation is value vs NET. But I think we've hit a thread here. Directly targetted ORGs are probably as good as, and potentially better than their NET counterparts.

I guess the question is whether end users can remember to type ORG, or remember to re-enter the domain after mistakenly typing COM. But I do think ORG is slowly dawning on new days ahead.

I have seen a rise in .org as well and have seen in the appraisal forums some umm.... interesting attempts for domain names that made no sense at all with the extension. However there are domains for every extension that just make you scratch your head and go "what were they thinking?" As for a general rise in it probably a nice increase since becoming available to the public but overall there is going to be quite some room to grow especially with targeted niches.

Yes, .ORGS are getting nice traction lately.

Just the other day, 5 of the top 10 Most Active names at TDMN auction were .orgs!

Also, .orgs with traffic have been dropping, so buyers are out.

I see more .orgs advertisements than .nets.....coms certainly are #1.

Also more press/media coverage on .orgs than .nets, folks know what .orgs stand for.....trust factor. Journalists reference .org sites all the time in their articles.

Tough not to spend $8 per year renewal fee on a good, keyword strong .org domain name...especially if you are along term investor.

Unless you are going to develop the .org name, you must stay out of certain categories where the .org doesn't work...so stay awake at the wheel and don't be afraid to eliminate them from your portfolio, if you do register them.

.nets....I don't understand them, so I have very few.

I think .org is limited to certain keywords only while .com and .net is more to general.
Example:
Asia.net vs Asia.org
Europe.net vs Europe.org
US.net vs US.org
and so on.
