I need some help choosing a dedicated server.

So far I am thinking of getting a value server from aplus.net

http://servers.aplus.net/valueservers.html

Currently I'm using Dreamhost and use "800 CPU Minutes" on a daily basis.

I figure when I launch my newer site that will increase to 5-6 times that. What do you folks think I should go with? Any other host suggestions? Ideally I wish I could find a host who can give me a lower end server for the first month ($50 or so a month) and then from there I can upgrade to something stronger without having to shell out more setup fees and so forth.

Any advice?

Before you decide do some research on the companies, a search on WHT (webhostingtalk) forums is a good start. You can see if a company has a lot of complaints or a good record.

Also you can find some good deals on servers in their hosting offers forum. Find a company with live chat and talk to them, they should be able to give you an idea of what you need.

Thanks for the help. I'll check out the wbt. I was hoping someone could help me equate Dreamhost's cpu usage "minutes" to something that ... well is useful.

Avoid aplus at all costs. Anyone in the industry knows that aplus isn't reputable.

I ended up going with nextpoint.

I know you went with the other, but you might want to look at WWW.Ez1web.com in the future: I've used one of their $50 a month servers for the last 8 months and it's been very solid.
