Hey guys! It's now about time I upgrade to a better video card! Right now I have a GeForce 440, and I'm NOT happy with it :( My main playing game right now is halo combat evolved, and I can't see any grass in it even! The graphics suck. So, I really want your recommendations for a good one.

I'm planning on playing Battlefield 2, and it can only supports the following cards:

Radeon X700 (PCIe)
Radeon X600 (PCIe)
GeForce 6600 (PCIe)
GeForce PCX 5900 (PCIe)
GeForce 5800 Series (AGP)
ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition
ATI Radeon X800 PRO
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350LX)
ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 8500 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
NVidia GeForce 6800 GT
NVidia GeForce 6800
NVidia GeForce FX 5950 Series
NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Series
NVidia GeForce FX 5700 Series

Which means that I need one of those. What I'm looking for is something in a price range UP to about 170/180. I'd be very hesitant if more than that. I'm not just going for the price, but also for a good one. I don't want to get a card that can play BF2 but can't play any of the new future releases. Also, I want to know the best place to buy the card that I need. I've heard a lot about newegg.com, and maybe I will use that (as they seem to have the cheapest prices).

Thanks guys.

P.S. I also forgot to mention that there are some good cards I've seen thay people say can play Doom 3 with all maximum video setting, but I've realized that one was so cheap, that even if it was on the highest settings, the graphics still were bad. So, I'm asking for great recommendations :) Thanks people!

I'd say go for Radeon X300 and above. They all support most new releases and work very well.

I am not a nVidia fan or whatsoever but I heard that their GeForce 6800's are doing good.

Any of the nvidias listed will do ya proud. Dont go to radeon. Not a scratch on nvidia In my opinion

I have the nVidia GeForce 6800 GT. It's sweet.

Hehe, scott, that would be nice, but it's more than 200 dollars :( I'll be doing some research on prices and stuff now, as it seems that both radeon and geforce are good (well, that's what people in NamePros have said :)).

If anyone else has anymore suggestions, that would be great.

What is the best place to get great priced video cards?

go for Nvidia. as the ATI can be crap playing BF2 . also Nvidia " sponsors" BF2, so more luck playing it better with an Nvidia Card

What's pcie? What's bad about it?

Also, what 440s? I don't see them on the list...

EDIT: Alright, I think I've narrowed down my options so far. I think I'll go with an Nvidia. Here is what I have found so far less than 170 dollars, with good user comments:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220
eVGA 128-A8-N350 Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card
$159.00 - $144 with $15 mail-in rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814122212
Leadtek A400LE Geforce 6800LE 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card
$139.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150068
XFX PVT40KND Geforce 6800 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card
$170.00

It looks like only those are from the list under 170 with good user reviews. HELP ME DECIDE!!!!

If there is something else that's not on the list, for a great price, PLEASE, PLEASE, let me know!

Ah, thanks :)

PCI-E means PCI express. Theoratically it should perform about 3-5 times better than AGP8x. But unfortunately it is not proving to be right at the moment.

This is the perfect card for you, I play battlefield 2 too and it runs perfectly on medium settings and I heard even high too but it is only $93 and it is a great card. Rampart, you might want to look at this card too.

I think I heard that XT isn't good though... It might play on high settings, but the graphics might be bad :( I feel very unsure of buying something like that for 93 dollars... Do you think that this card could play future games coming out on pc?

pcie = pci express
agp = some random meaning i forgot

but there 2 entirely different slots, your graphics card beeing a geforce 440 means your mobo is agp which means yo ucant get a pci-e

i run a ati radeon x800 256mb pci-e and its a great card handles bf2 pretty well but wont fit in your box.

I've been concidering what hotrod said...
http://www.newegg.com/product/produ...N82E16814102335

I've read the reviews for it, and everyone LOVES it! And the price is so great! Would this SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600XT 256M Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card fit into my computer?

Thanks. And axilant, I will take a look at that site. Thanks.

EDIT: Pricewatch has it for 86 :)

I would go with Newegg but also as long as you have an AGP slot and a decent pc then it should run fine.

Well, I don't know much about AGP, PCI, or anything else like that, but if the GeForce4 MX 440 is AGP, then I guess I could get this one. Also, I only have 512 MB ram, not one gig. It's still ok for running games, right?

Thanks.

There are no graphics cards (at the moment) that can utilitize the full 2112MB/s provided by AGP 8x, therefore as of right now there are no advantages/disadvantages to using AGP or PCI Express (x16 - 8000MB/s) - however if you wish to future proof your box, PCI-E is the way to go.

Edit, I just found this, which sums it up nicely.

For those who are looking for an upgrade to their system, PCIe (short for PCI Express) is a great technology to take advantage of. However, if you are looking to have the best possible graphics, there is no reason to splurge on a motherboard just with PCIe as AGP 4x and 8x should provide ample bandwidth for any intensive games you run, including Doom III and the soon-to-be released titles. In other words, pick what motherboard you want, donโ€™t just select one that utilizes PCIe. Presently, PCI and AGP will handle most jobs adequately, but for the future, well, thatโ€™s a different story.

Alright, thanks everyone! I think that I have made a decision: I'm going with the SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600XT 256M Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card. Only 93 dollars. Plus, there are like 20+ positive GREAT reviews on it running BF2, Doom 3, Half Life, etc. I think that this is a great card, ten for $93 dollars!

Thanks everyone! (man, I'm excited! This is a big thing for me :) - now I can probably buy a ram stick with the money I saved)
