Hey guys!

Some of you know that my computer fried. Yes, the processor and motherboard don't work anymore, so I have decided to part ways with my 1.2 GHZ AMD, and purchase a new machine. I am looking at something in the $500 range :tu:.

I have my eyes set on this one on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Intel-P4-2-4...42826QQcategoryZ51139QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

The store is in Toronto, so I can go pick it up. Actually, I don't even need to buy it from the auction, I can go in and purchase it, I believe.

So, do you think the computer is worth it?

The basic specs are:

Intel P4 Prescott Processor 2.4 AE GHz FSB533 1MB
512MB DDR333 PC2700 Memory
80GB 7200RPM 2MB Cache
LG 52X32X52 CD-ReWriter
ATI Powered Radeon 9250se 128MB DDR AGP 8x Video
6-Channel AC97 Audio

Price: Around $550 after taxes, etc.

I am not too concerned about it being 2.4. I understand it will be suitable enough for the tasks I plan to perform on the computer.

My main questions are as follows:

Is the computer worth the price? And more importantly:

How does the Prescott processor stand against other processors like AMD.
And is the video card reliable?

I've done some research, but looking for more opinions from you experts :gl: !

Thanks for your help guys :] !

You can probably do better on your own, but i have no idea with canadian prices. It looks decent for an average use PC, though it dosent look like it comes with Windows (have disk or buying seperate?)

Looking at tigerdirect.ca, I do not see an prebuilts that beat the price. If you plan on expanding the processor or ever get into gaming, that computer isnt good for that.

So you think that the processor cannot be changed in the future? I am looking for an average PC, nothing overly special. I just dont want a Celeron :o ! They are HORRIBLE! My 1.2GHZ AMD ran faster than the the 2.6GHZ Celeron computer I bought a while ago.

Thanks for the replies guys :tu: !

Would love some more :) .

Thanks :] !

looks like a decent computer and the seller has a 100% feedback I dont think you would run into any problems if you did bid on it

Hey,

Well, it uses the Intel 478 Socket, and the current new one is the Intel - LGA 775. So no new processors are coming out for that socket i believe. Yes, stay away from the celerons :)

a 2.4GIG pentuim 4 gives you plenty of processing speed for proly what you will be doing,And most machines are used a year and half or two before people upgrade any way,With that alienware tower you can actually build another machine yourself,I just built one with a alienware tower,Nice choices of CPUs you can use in that tower,So really all in all,The machine is priced well,Easily upgradable.

Id personally just go for an AMD XP and an asus or asrock motherboard if you want it cheap. The XP's are extremely cheap now since the 64's are out and theyd max any intel really much cooler and reliable in my experience. Asus boards you cant fault them, asrock are asus's sister company same quality, just alot laot cheap quite cutt down boards. But they still do the job.

Nice pc.

Celerons are just cheaper versions for a pentium. Basicly they rip out the l2 cache to make it cost less, and make the processor use the cache memory from the motherboard, so therfore it runs slower.

EDIT:
Spelt Celeron, Celron :hehe:

64 bit cards are worthless without a 64bit operating system.

Vista will be 64bit, there is a 64bit version of xp that is available for download too i believe? Thats the only way id buy a 64bit processor, is having a 64bit os.

Because if you dont, your not using 32bit of the processor, and therfor, a waste of money.
