I currently am starting a photography business called farkin. One problem is that there is another site called www.farkin.net which isn't really a business, just a big online forum for mountain biking. I also shoot mountain biking, skateboarding etc etc. They have no problems with me having my name as that (At least I hope not since I have spoken to them) but sometimes I get a few people that get pissed off with me for having the same name as them but that is extremely rare. Do you think I should change my name and come up with something different and go through all the hassle of changing banners etc or just keep my name and see how things pan out?

My website is located at www.farkin.tk

The name isn't so great although I admit it makes for a good conversation piece.

There is no way that that company would be bothered about you having their "Tokelau" domain name. .TK names are free, and recieve no traffic... they are worthless. Not even Microsoft have claimed their .TK domain.

If you want to change something about your site, get rid of that stupid intro. The word "Farkin" flying around and some tiny little un seeable images... for what seems to be the whole duration of the background song... sack the intro.

you should register a TLD before start a site like that ..... .tk man come on... they dont recieve any traffic :) If the other company said ok obviously they don't feel a threat from you.

I'd say farkinimages , farkindesigns ??

The .tk was only for experimental purposes until I got the site running quite good which I do now. I'll be ditching the introduction once I get a logo etc made and just applied for an abn which should be accepted tomorrow. Once that is done, i'll be registering a .com.au domain name, this a good idea?

Just curious :D

You from Australia? Also, I forgot to ask....

Say I got a domain name such as www.farkin-imaging.com compared to something like www.farkin.com.au, would I notice quite a big difference in traffic? Are .com.au still classified as GOOD domains and not cheap and tacky like .tk?

Kind regards Joe.

I'm from Tonga, glad :D I would humbly suggest you get farkin.biz, and redirect farkin.com.au to it. :) If this is your biz, a gTLD would be a great investment in the mid-long term if you are a SOHO or SMB. As I said earlier, farkin is a pretty good conversation piece, and a great way to pick up babes :sold:

Well i'm very new to domains since I have never previously payed for one. Could you please explain the advantages of getting a .biz and redirecting .com.au to it....Also, please explain what a gTLD and SOHO or SMB is? Oh and about the farkin name, that's why i'm getting t-shirts made :P

Regards Joe.

phew.. for a second i thought your domain was farkin.com... i went there and its some adult site.... this is bad for a mountain bike forum, as they have more intense issues then you... i think that they would change their name.

Also .. i noticed your domain is a .tk... just how many of these fourm browsers goto your domain?

.BIZ stands for business, and is a Generic Top Level Domain like .COM which is one class above ccTLDs. .BIZ is expected to be the badge of the new age entrepreneurs like you, althougth the .COMmies will disagree.

SOHO means you are a single man operation.
SMB means you are a small medium business.

It costs only $7 to get domains today, so don't sweat it, and if you are new to the business, you should be advised that someone will get the idea and take your name in 1 min from now...

When you say how many of these forum browsers go to my site, do you mean the guys from www.farkin.net ? If so, not sure as we are not affiliated in any way....

Well to register a .com.au you have to have a abn number and it costs around $45.00 to register which is valid for 2 years. Also, i'm a SOHO :D

Then get farkin.biz first, you don't sweat over such minor things, and if you are a SOHO, then perfect. Least you could lose is $7, and let farkin.com get the flack for doing porno.com stuff on farkin.net :D
