This new company is actually owned by NBC (which owns Scifi.com)
What lucky s.o.b. sold that to them?
I'll never mock 4-letter names ever again!

Gee "web 2.0" names are getting weird...
Eefoof, Squidoo, Meebo, Xobni...

how much do you think the name went for?

If I knew NBC wanted my name, i wouldn't sell it for less than mid xx,xxx

But then, perhaps in this case, NBC could go with any other name if Hulu.com was quoted at too high a price

btw, happy 1000 post to me

Congrats!

But what if you didn't know it was NBC?

even otherwise, Hulu.com is worth atleast mid xxxx. CVCV with all premium letters and repeating vowels, I wouldn't let it go for less than 5000

I agree it, and others like it, are worth $xxxx, but "mid xx,xxx" is quite different than $5,000. Your difference in price seems to depend on knowing if your buyer has deep pockets, which is fine....but if you didn't know, it sounds like you would sell it to an individual for $5k or so.

So my next question is how do you know when to ask or hold out for $xx,xxx on a domain that you think may have a general market value of 5k? Furthermore, is this the reason most domainers seem to prefer the "make me an offer" approach, hoping the buyer will tip his hand, and the domainer can then come back with a high counter? After all, who wants to put a 5k price tag on any popular niche domain today when the prices are going up so dramatically and could be worth much more in a week or to a specific buyer?

Someone sent this story to boing-boing :D

Oh and I bet the person selling it didn't know it was NBC. They always use lawyers/proxies for those kinds of purchases. Happened to me once and I didn't know who really bought it until much later. Got a fair price so I didn't mind.

hulu in Chinese pronunciation(only pronunciation) is a lucky item, actually it is a fruit(Lagenaria siceraria) but most the way it is referred to a symbol of lucky.

I am not sure if this hulu IS that hulu in Chinse, but I am sure if you say "hulu" to any Chinese people and they must regard it to the Chinese hulu

Here is a picture of hulu production:

Hulu means gourd in Chinese. I swear to god i was looking for Chinese domain the other day and typed in hulu.com. The f**cking same day the domain was bought! All this while my luck stinks so much in buying domains but i didn't know it could be that bad.

this is a good question: during negotiation, how do you know if the buyer is a big
guy?

I think every domainer fears selling his domains short. Thats why the appraisal section is flooded with posts. Personally, until you have a huge portfolio and can afford to sell a $10,000 domain for say, $7500, I would take the make offer approach. Its a more conservative approach to domaining, but one that gets you larger rewards.
Frank Schilling would've probably sold Hulu.com for $3000
But a newbie domainer like me would hold onto it until I get at least $5000. Those 2000 bucks matter a lot when you don't have a huge portfolio.

Here's a great story dealing with that exact situation (big company pretending to be a little guy), where an NP member made the correct "read" - the sale of TripleAdvantage.com for $12,000!

From TMZ.com

While "hulu" has no English meaning (then again, neither does Google), it does translate in a few other languages: In Indonesian, the word "hulu" means "butt." Catchy, ain't it?

And in an ironic turn (given the litigious nature of broadcast networks), the word means "cease" or "desist" in Swahili. Didn't think this one through, did they?

:hehe:

whoever passed up on the opportunity to buy hulu.net at NP missed a great deal (it was offered for $200). Now hulu is gone in all the extensions.

Thats an amazing post. I never thought that big companies would act like small businesses to get cheaper deals.

Interesting. I'm in negotiations now for one of my domains where the buyer is playing mom and pop. I wonder if he's fronting for something larger??
