NameServer(s) Question

Hello there, I currently have one IP address that I would like to use to host my website. However I'm not sure what to do when it comes to creating name servers that will work for that IP. For example I wanted to host a website on my computer using Windows, and I set two name servers with the same IP Address like ns1.mywebsite.com and ns1.mywebsite.com that both have an IP Address of 127.0.0.1. Would such a thing work or is more work required to do such a thing? Basically I am trying to get a domain name to be able to access my computer's hosting.

Correct, basically I am trying to host my website from home.

I am also running Windows XP.

That is fairly easy to do...

First thing is do a search for free dns providers... that should get you going. Unfortunately I dont know of any off hand...

If you have a static IP address you'll be able to host your website on it.

As for creating nameservers, it's required that every nameserver has a unique IP address. So ns1.yourwebsite.com and ns2.yourwebsite.com will not be able to share an IP address. You would however be able to use the same IP address for one nameserver and your website.

I also recommend using one of the free dns services that are available to you, at least for a secondary DNS. Search google for free dns and you'll find several.

Namecheap also offer this service i think? You will find loads of other companys out there that offer this without the need of your own nameserver..

The only problem is that I have to make use of NameServers, I dont want to use redirectors and etc.

But you dont have to be running your own nameserver, dynamic dns just converts the domain to your IP address.. you make use of thier nameserver that converts it for you.

Unless i got it wrong and you where not talking about running your own nameserver, sorry...

Just a quick note no-one as far as I can see has noticed,

If you are going to set up nameservers dont point them to 127.0.0.1 as that is an internal Ip not the IP the rest of the world see.

www.zoneedit.com is what I used before I got my own NameServers online...

They can do dynamic IPs (takes some work, but they document it) and up to five domains free
