Reading in the Appraisal Section it dawned on me that part of the reason people have a fear of purchasing a .Tv name is all the ridiculous things they've heard about the extension.

I thought it might be fun to put together a list of all the myths about .Tv and then analysing the facts.

Here's the first.

Myth 1.
".tv registration prices can be jacked up to premium status by the registrar"

Fact
Most .TV owners pay a regular amount each for their .Tv names - anything between $17 at DomainMonster and Namecheap to $24.99 at GoDaddy and Enom.

People who choose to purchase 'premium names' are people who have essentially agreed to pay a fixed renewal fee. Dependent on the name the fee can be as low as $35 (London.TV) or as high as $100,000 (USA.TV) each year. The amount for the renewal is 'fixed' and will not go up or down as long as people renew on time.

The only time the premium price of a name will go up is when it is not renewed by the owner.

For example, should the owner of London.TV, who presently pays $35 a year and has done so every year since 2003, decides he no longer wants the name, he can simply let it go!!!!!!! (but of course, he'd be crazy to do so)

It would then go back to Verisign/Enom and have its premium changed before being allowed back on open sale. I imagine it would return with a premium tag of $100,000 a year renewal.

Premium names do NOT change. If you pay $500 a year for a name, as long as you renew the name on time it will never change. If you then sell the name the premiun still remains the same for the new owner.

DON'T FORGET - most people don't have 'premium' names in .TV - they are 'normal reg fee' ones, with normal renewals.

Sorry NiceDomains - this thread isn't aimed at you - and apologies if it seemed that way.

My reason for starting the thread is that so many, many, people mention such strange and exotic myths about .tv

I also realised that with the loss of so many of the old school of Tv'ers, or those that simply don't post anymore, the more negative, but wholly untrue 'ideas' about .Tv tend to get aired without anyone questioning whether they are correct.

Jimbo, no I didn't think this thread was aimed at me. I appreciate you correcting me, and I wasn't being sarcastic. I did subscribe to this thread to learn more. .TV is lucky to have a dedicated person like you behind it that is willing to educate domainers misinformed about the extension.

Myth 2.
".TV is just another extension like .COM or .ORG. The only difference is you type .TV at the end of the name instead."

Fact
Unlike gTLDs (Generic top-level domains) which are subject to strict regulation and control including price caps on annual renewal increases, .TV is a ccTLD (Country code top-level domain) for the Country of Tuvalu. It is in essence like owning property on foreign soil subject to the rule of law of that Country.

Individual ccTLDs have varying requirements and fees for registering subdomains and usually have no price caps on annual renewal fee increases. This is evidenced by the current practice by Enom of raising the renewals of dropping premiums by as much as 5000% and sometimes even more.

Individual ccTLDs were intended to be used by the individuals and businesses living in, or doing business in, the corresponding Country. In the future, there could be a local presence requirement (for instance, citizenship or other connection to the ccTLD), in order to maintain registrant status.

This could never happen with gTLDs like .COM and .ORG.

Myth 3
"Tuvalu is sinking - so no country - no domain extension!"

Fact

Without wanting to sound too much like a science teacher - Tuvalu is NOT sinking...

...the sea level is actually rising.

(and in part that is because the world has too much ‘hot air'!)

Now, for all the scientists out there, if the sea level rises by enough to cover all of Tuvalu (which even the worst scenarios don’t see happening in the next fifty years) we will all be a bit too concerned about most of the towns and cities (like London, New York, Miami, etc) along the coasts of dozens of many other countries.

The oceans don't just rise over Tuvalu, they rise equally, EVERYWHERE.

So, for those in London and New York, think what that extra five metres in sea level could do to your city.

And then consider the idiotic words you hear about Tuvalu.

Out of interest, there is a REAL precedent. When a volcano erupted in Tristan da Cunha (TLD = .sh) in 1961, the entire population were evacuated to wooden huts in the disused Pendell Army Camp in Merstham, Surrey, England. But that still didn't stop Tristan da Cunha from existing. The same would happen to the residents of Tuvalu.

Extensions can disappear - think .SU .YU and .CS - but normally because there is a GOOD reason AND only when there is an alternative - think .RU .RS and .ME

Tuvalu is not disappearing - and with Verisign paying millions each year to own the .TV extension, even if it did ‘go underwater’ there would be a stilt city as the 'remaining Tuvalu' within days.

Well there has already been three land grabs with .tv

The first was back in the early part of this decade when people like Mrs. Jello got names.

Then we had the golden era of fall 2006 when names were discounted.

Then we had a mini grab in May 2007 with the Demand Media relaunch.

How is the pricing of premium names determined?
The cost of each premium name is decided by VeriSign, who is the official registry for the .TV top level domain. As the exclusive retailer for .TV Premium Names, Demand Media and its brands eNom, eNomCentral, and eNom.tv have aggressively set premium name pricing to help drive adoption of the .TV brand.
Why are certain .TV domains considered premium?
The original .TV registry, The .TV Corporation, selected a limited number of generic names and assigned variable prices based on various factors. As a result, this has kept a steady stream of high quality domains available for businesses and the general public.
What is the process for deciding which name is a premium? Might a name currently on the premium list will become non-premium in the future?
The list of premium domains is determined solely by VeriSign, who is the .TV registry. Our role is simply as the exclusive registrar for the .TV premium names under the conditions set by the registry.
Premium Name Renewal
Will the renewal rate ever go up?
Annual renewal fees for .TV premium names will be the same as the initial "Buy Now" registration price. If I purchased a premium .TV domain name before May 1, 2007, can I renew at the price I bought the name for?
Yes, renewals will be available shortly and will be the same fee as the initial domain registration.
If I purchased a premium .TV domain name after May 1, 2007, can I go back and add additional years?
Yes, this capability will be available shortly and the fee for the additional years will be the same as the initial domain registration.

If its off the market, its off the market. While it is pretty dubious for a registry to indulge in this sort of behavior, at the end of the day its not that much different than large portfolio domainers holding domains for speculative purposes and not releasing them to market, or demanding outrageous prices or lease fees.

When you go to buy something, its either in your price range or its not. If its a good investment then do it, if not forget it.

As long as your renewal rates don't change while you are holding the domain, there isn't that much difference. When you buy, you should know what you are purchasing. If the initial cost or the annual cost is too high for you to make a profit, then you should be buying something else.

If you let a domain drop then thats a hazard. In a practical sense it doesn't matter that much whether a registry buys the name and puts it into price hostage, or a domainer does.

While I don't think that should be the role of a registry, it is their option under the current rules. It may be a reprehensible practice. On the other hand, if they weren't doing it, investors would have scooped those names for the most part and the net result would be about the same for a prospective buyer. The buyer would just be paying the renewal fees up front.

"TV is for television or multimedia websites. Pure myth. Any domain name in any TLD can work for television, video, or multimedia. The TLD .TV does not give you any special tools for creating multimedia-rich content. .TV does not stand for television. It is the ccTLD or country-code TLD for Tuvalu Island. An island in the pacific that had no real use for owning a TLD so they sold the rights to sell domain names on their TLD to a company that leads people to believe it stands for television. It works. People buy them and use them and associate them with television and that is ok. It’s just a myth that .TV was created to mean television."

Technically correct

However, .TV is the defacto extension used by thousands of media companies around the world - and they represent the world of 'actual' television.

As example Five.TV did not decide to use the name FIVE.tv because they wanted to be associated with Tuvalu - they did it because the world knows it means television.

Referencing to some blog on an obscure Chinese site is NOT evidence of fact. It is merely proof of your unfathomable desire to belittle the .tv extension.

But MicroGuy, the poor soldado, has absolutely nothing better to do than venture on this futile crusade with his mentor, the indefatiqueable conquistador, Snoop and "sayswho, the messanger"(:p), so I would advise to you and all concerned to be content in your knowledge, jimbola, and allow the Men from La Mancha to ride slowly into the sinking sunset in their undying quest for the "truth".
