I'm being employed full time by a company for me to make them rank 1st in the search engines (its my first day), not an easy task... but i have time and some knowledge from my own sites.

I just need to ask a few questions to those who know seo a whole load better than me.

The company i am working for is a security company, i have sorted the meta and head tags, sitemap, google webmaster tools and starting to submit to directories.

Is this the best way about it? How should i go about getting backlinks? Article submissions, forum posting... ?????? :(

NP$ to whoever can help me :'(

To get back links try contacting companies that the 1 you work for does business with, see if they will provide a link. Also look for sites that have relevant content to the industry of the site you are working on and request that they link to you.

And yes article submission can be a good way to achieve links. Be sure however before submitting anything that you check the text with the company to ensure it meets with their approval.

Another goo thing to do is put things on your site that people will feel compelled to link too. Maybe tools that will help them do things or games. Of course they should be relevant to what the site is about and be in line with the image the company has.

Peter you have been a brilliant help so far i really appreciate it. Would directory submission be worthwhile? Is there any other techniques other than building backlinks i should concentrate on?

Backlinks are a big thing when it comes to gaining ranking so will be a major part of what you need to do.

You say you have sorted the titles and meta keywords and description. Have you also looked at possibly rewriting some of the content so it enhances the keywords you are looking for? This is of course a major thing as well. Also ensure that the site is designed with SEO in mind. Make sure it is as easy as possible for search engines to gather information from. Make use of H1, H2 etc tags. Many people use bold to show important info and titles but search engines think highly of the h tags.

Directories are not necessarily going to help a lot but I would still do them. Ensure you have a list of keywords and a good description before you start and try to maintain that. Directories are quick and easy to submit too so I think worthwhile. Of course DMOZ can be a pain to get onto but try anyway.

Before you start submitting to directories ensure you have an email address that you do not mind getting spammed. Maybe 1 you could drop later as you will receive a lot of spam from it.

The other technique I mentioned such as creating tools or games that may be relevant is a technique that has been given more prominence as of late. Look up link baiting and you will get the idea. Of course this sort of thing does not work for all types of sites but it is something you can look into and decide upon.

put the target keywords in the title text and you'll be fine. If it is 3 words, you will be number one and they will think you are a genius. Two words much harder. 1 word near impossible unless its for 'sequrity"

First of all the keywords.

When you are settled on them. Then make a list of variants of that keywords. You can try http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com

Then check the Titles of the pages, meta tags, meta keywords, on page content, footer.

After that has some keywords in it. Pick up one big directory list and start submitting with the variation in title of the link submitted. Use the related keywords you found earlier.

Write 5 articles and submit them to articles sites.

Do Social bookmarking again with variations in the title of the bookmark.

Do forum posting and take advantage of the signatures.

The above things will surely show you some results and you can base your future efforts on the results you have achieved from doing the above thing.

Try this page for lots of ideas of where to get links from. There should be over 250 methods of building links listed there.

Article submissions, directories, and forum posting are OK, but they are not the highest quality links.

dave9713,

if you ever start submitting your site to directories i suggest to use roboform or similar software to make your chores a little less hassle rather than copying and pasting your title, description, email and etc. all over again to the next directory.
