As some may have noticed I usually am the one to trash on GoDaddy when there's a chance but it's not for any reason, it's from my experience.
You see back when I was a teen & started getting into computers & the internet, the only place I could think of to host my domains & websites was GoDaddy, I didn't do much research for competitors I just went straight to them because I thought they were the go-to in terms of bang for your buck. I knew of them from those old wacky advertisements with that old logo of the guy's head & the big banners they would place on shows like X Games. The way they advertised was almost aimed at teens so I was easily hooked, I ended up purchasing the cheapest plan on the longest term to get the best price, you see that's when it started to go down, the server was extremely limited & I was barely able to host 2 websites (with no visitors) without me getting messages of exceeded limits, I would always contact support to see what was going on but they would always try to sell me a more expensive plan, I didn't think much about it & continued buying the different domain extensions to redirect to my main websites. GoDaddy remained my registrar until I became an adult when I realized, wait a minute there are other places with better deals & better support... it was too late I already purchased a lot of domains with them & most with multi-year registrations... Now the only thing I could do was wait for everything to get close to experiencing & start moving away, I would get constant calls from agents telling me to renew my domains eventually I renewed a few since they gave me a discount, just so I can get them off my ass I renewed a few & told them I would let the rest drop.
They target inexperienced people with those deals & ads but once you're in they make it hard to leave by constantly upselling you "deals" until you have too much with them to just leave (those inexperienced like I was easily fall for it) & boy they do really markup pricing for renewals to make up for those deals they offer.
It's not only the shady beginner targeting but the pretty much monopoly they have on expired domains, you see once I moved all my main stuff away I stayed because I had paid for domain auction/monitoring & after a while, I realized how f**** it really is, when I first started investing I would get wowed by the deals on domains "worth thousands!" so I would win them later to be notified that I also have to pay the 1-year registration as well, I was like no big deal the sale now is just 99 cents per year, nope the sale doesn't apply to auctions so here's an additional 35$ fee! & you better pay for it or your account will be terminated! Which it also seems some of those other bidders could be fake because some domains were not even that good but were pushing the auction up into the hundreds... My question is why do they have the right to sell expired domains from pretty much any other registrar while the other registrars can only auction their expired domains (if they even have auctions) & where the hell does the money even go? That 30k sell on auctions? I doubt it's going to charity.
Recently this domain that expired from a small registrar had the domain on auction on GoDaddy so I had to repay the 5$ auction membership to not even be able to win the domain because the price was going way higher than I wanted to pay (it wasn't even that good a domain just an extension I could redirect to my site) anyways I still had a few domains on my GoDaddy account so I decided to auction them to namecon or whatever it was called, I submitted my list & only 1 was chosen & it sold for about $300 but when I checked the domain was a typo to the once I submitted, now GoDaddy is demanding that I give a domain which I dont even own nor do I remember submitting or they will TERMINATE my account & would have to pay to reopen it. What the hell?! I think its a setup, they won't even waive it even tho I said "I might have made an error by accident can you please move on" (I'm pretty sure it was from their part because I double-checked the list before submitting) Then they tell me that if it was my fault why didn't I correct it................
WTF once I submitted the list there was no way for me to check the list I submitted it was literally a form on the website with no confirmation email!
To top it off I added a closeout domain to my cart yesterday that I liked & contacted support (Again about the rip-off registration price to see if I could get a discount) The agent was extremely rude/sassy & I noticed midway that the domain was taken out & replaced with an email service when I gave him/her my account pin to check, they responded with that I had to call to speak with an auction specialist to see if I could get a discount (which was again no) so I didn't say anything about the switcharoo & said thanks anyways & ended the chat. (They said several departing phrases like "no..., thank you!" "have a good day!" etc... as if being sassy/ glad they registered it for themselves) I then tried readding the domain & what do you know it was indeed registered!
I greatly advise you do your research before coming close to GoDaddy. If this thread wasn't enough for you don't worry there are thousands more all over the internet
