Multiple Auctions

A quick question (I'm new to the domain game):

I have my eye on a specific domain name that is set to expire in a couple of days. I've signed up on Snapnames for a pre-order auction. I am wondering if it will improve my chances of getting the domain if I sign up for auctions on other sites as well? If so, which sites would you recommend?

Also, with the pre-order auction: will the expired domain pop up on a list somewhere as being available soon, thereby attracting all of the domain buyers out there, or does that not happen until it becomes publicly available? I'm just curious about what kind of competition i will be up against.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to NP.
As a rule yes it is preferable to backorder at several places to increase the odds of winning the name: snapnames, pool, and possibly a few others including godaddy but snapnames.
It depends on the extension (.com, .us) and the actual domain status and registrar. For instance many registrars will first attempt to auction the names before they let them drop. Network solutions, register.com, directi and many others will send their expired domains to snapnames before they actually drop. If no-one bites then they will be deleted.
Check the whois for the domain in action and verify the status. For example a domain that is registered with Network solutions, that expires will be sent to snap approx 35 days after expiry date. Then you can place a backorder at snapnames. At that stage (before it drops) it is useless to backorder elsewhere.
As you can see there are quite a few pecularities.
If you can tell the actual domain status, extension and registrar perhaps I can be more specific.

There are lists of expired domains available so if the name is good you will likely have competition. Even if your backorder is successful you may end up bidding for the name against other people.
Good luck :)

.. and if you do happen to win one through Snapnames and the domain happens to be regged at NetworkSolutions, one must tack on $34frickindollarsand99cents for 1 year registration?

No the registration is fee is already included in the price of the backorder so it's good for approx. 1 year
