.mobi mTLD released first RESERVED Major City domain - Very good news!

The first major city domain is released from the reserved mTLD list.

Not New York has the honour, but Helsinki!

Okay, so what is the procedure here? The domain was not in RFP, it was not auctioned, and the whois still lists the registry as the owner.

It would be superb if every city or country of the reserved list could get their .mobi for peanuts...


That would be FANTASTIC!!!

It seems to be this way with Helsinki...

I understand the cybersquatters thing but once a legitimate body is identified as the "rightful heir", then they need to let these go to those cities.

This is the best way to promote the .mobi and it's international appeal. Can you imagine the millions upon millions of dollars New York, London, Los Angeles would spend to promote a portable guide in the form of a .mobi?

Forget our effort to get the word out. Let these major corporations and municipalities do all the promoting and branding for us. We'll just go along for the ride.

In the meantime, I guess I'll hang onto my TokyoBay.mobi.

I'm certainly confused, as well ... I believe it may be like another trial/HYPE "Weather.mobi" short-term promotion (at the end of the day, to sell more registrations), IMHO.

I don't have a problem if mTLD gives Helsinki.mobi to Helsinki city govenment.

Helsinki.mobi is ‘on loan’ to the Helsinki City Authority and they have signed a showcase Agreement with us for one year. The purpose of this exercise is to provide us with some insight as to how we might co-operate with city / country authorities in the allocation of some reserved names. I stress that this allocation method has not yet been planned or decided - it is just a learning experience for dotMobi. We also want to see how much traction the site gets and how much it is used.
