I agree with S~ here. Free always has a cost somewhere. All of my .MPs are with get.mp however which makes the $20.00 investment that much more worthwhile.

No. I shouldn't have to pay over a grand for a name I paid $20 for.

Adam, did you register strictly at .mp before chi.mp was impemented last spring?
The $1050 fee is added even after you pay a $20 fee with get.mp.

If you registered via chi.mp after spring 2008, and then paid the $20 to the get.mp program, it will still cost you. The terms in the pdf are before chi.mp opened.

Ah, I chose the second method and recently registered with chi.mp then moved the names to get.mp

Although the prices are very extreme I think over a certain amount of time they will reduce the cost but they have to cover expenditure somewhere and apparently it lies in the details.

perhaps they are trying to encourage development and kill the aftermarket that only domainers care about. the people behind .mp don't appear to be concerned with what domainers want. they want adoption and usage, and IMHO don't care about flippers.

The person running .mp responded to a question I had before. I just sent him an email asking to clarify fees, if any, on transfers. Seems excessive and could be an older TOS that they slapped a new date on because i know they used to charge a lot more for a domain name than $20 ( I think it was $200-$300 ). I'll report back when/if I hear from him.

Hi Bob and thanks for your note.

The transfer fee is $20. Is that considered to be high?

That's the short answer but I'd be glad to send you the various forms, etc when you're ready.

Thanks for your support and your continued interest in the.mp domain!

Mike

Response back from .mp support. I sent another email asking for more specifics and will post it when I receive it.

Thanks for your patience while I worked through this. We launched open registration for chi.mp last week and we have been absolutely buried with new sign-ups...far more than we expected. A great problem to have, but it has slowed my response to your inquiry.

I can now confirm that the entire document you referred to on "Cancellation and Transfer" is applicable only to those situations where we are directed to cancel or transfer a domain pursuant to a decision from WIPO, a similar dispute resolution provider, or a court of some kind. The USD $1,000 fee is intended to cover costs related to arbitration, mediation and legal procedures and should not be incurred except in extreme cases where trademark infringement is alleged and an amicable settlement cannot be reached.

Your inquiry however has identified a problem with our documents in that the transfer and registration fees listed there are not correct...they should be USD $20 instead of USD $50 and I will have that corrected immediately.

Finally, I will address your specific example regarding the amicable transfer of a domain between two parties. If the Current Registrant’s registration fees for domain name(s) to be conveyed have a value exceeding thirty (30) days, the balance is assigned to the New Registrant’s account. The Current Registrant’s existing registration anniversary date is used to make this determination. If registration expires within thirty (30) days or less, the New Registrant shall pay Saipan DataCom a registration fee of USD $20 per domain name.

Rsponse received

Google only owns orkut.com, .com.br and .co.in ones. Are all rest(info, net, org) Trademark violated?
Anyways Orkut is not a Trademark only crap.

Wow, Thanks for the link. Twitter is now using the .mp extension, that is great news for this extension! I pesonally like the mp extension over the mx extension. besides being less money, it just looks better and is an acronym for many more things :) Repped

BP, the .mp transfer went smooth via sedo. Had user use the get.mp page to do it.
Unfortunately since I only sell .coms, I failed to notice the 40% fee sedo took for .mp :(
