Moving to a new registrar.. Transfer AND renewal cost?

After many reviews I read, I decided to move my domains to namecheap.com. I am confused though because it's giving me a transfer cost PER YEAR. Isn't transfer just one time process? I thought transferring domain means changing registrar and it's a one time thing. Does this mean I will pay for transfer price every year as well as domain renewal whenever it's required?

I hope this makes more sense to you than it does to me!

hmm, I just added a transfer to my cart at namecheap, I can't see where it says "per year"?

I guess it just gives you an option to add more than one year when you transfer a domain to them? I've transfered few domains to them last month(just before the prices changed), but I don't remember about the prices or anything like that.
I know when I moved a domain to GoDaddy it let me choose more than one year, so I've added 2 years to my domain instead of just one(Got a good price for it too, 11$ and something for 2 years).

This one night, I searched for a new domain registrar for hours and found a forum (I'm not sure if it was namepros) that had all kinds of reviews of domain registrars. Some of the reputable forum users seem to be happy with namecheap and godaddy's service.

Well.
When you transfer a domain, you get another year added until it expires.
This is most likely why it is 'per year'.

Another year of registration.

Say you've transfered a domain expiring in Jan 2008, you'll pay the $8-ish transfer/reg fee which will add a year to registration, meaning it expires in Jan 2009.
