Moving a domain to a new host

I have been trying to arrange a new domain and space with a provider. I have used the provider before without too many problems. However, this time I am having no luck connecting with any ftp programs to the space he has provided. I can connect to my other sites on the same IP address without any hassle. I can also connect to my new domain using the Site Administrator (so I know the username and password work). I have even had a web site designer friend try to connect using his ftp programs with the same result.

The provider has registered the domain name using his own name and address. As this situation has not been resolved for several weeks, I am now getting a bit impatient. If I go to a new host, can I easily get my domain name transferred from the original provider? As far as I am concerned, an unsuitable service has so far been supplied and I am not keen to part with any money (other than domain name costs as long as I can transfer them).

Thus far, no invoice has been raised and no money has changed hands.

This is for a non-commercial site relating to a hobby of mine!

Any suggestions? Where do I stand?

It really depends which host you are using now. I get my hosting through polurnet.com and am very happy with their service. You might want to check them out. The hosting part will be easy, it is getting your domain that will be more difficult. If you can get into your control panel, unlock your domain and initiate a transfer from another company. To do this, your domain will have to be at least 60 days old from the registration date.

Companies that specialize in hosting but who also sell domains are notorious for making it difficult to take your domain with you to a difficult company. I have heard some companies charge transfer fees and some don't even repsond to emails.

Best of luck with the situation.

Thanks Fonzie, I had looked at polurnet.com and they actually provide more space for less dosh.

I guess I need to sort out the domain name.
