I've thought of that often as we're in that biz, so to say, but never tried it. imdb, variety, productionweekly (I think they folded recently), and many other sources to find out about upcoming movie titles. I'd think if it were a big studio production you may have their legal team experiences but not likely for an independent film.

I suppose though you'd have to buy two DN's; one for the title and then wrap up the other possibilities with movie, themovie, etc. That is why I haven't done it.

I know of a few people that track upcoming actors and squat their names, but I'm not in to that. One of our friends had to buy her daughters domain from one, cost her $250.

Let us know if you try it!!

I have noticed many movies promote there movie's website in the following form:

Movie-Name.com

strange... :D

I've seen studios that just use their own websites, & just make a new directory for their new movies as well rather then buying a new domain

Yes, I also find it common to see movies advertise their urls with "movie" or "themovie" affixed to the title at the end...

My impression about these kinds of names is that the big studios would not spend a dime to buy these names off you, but would rather spend thousands more to teach you a lesson...

I'd have to agree with Razor. I usually see stuff like CoolNameMovie.com

But how are you going to find out what's coming out? You are gonna need inside sources because by the time you see an ad they have already set up a site.

I saw a site that had all the movies that were probably maybes coming out in 2 years if so once. I should have bookmarked it.

I think worth noting is the new movie "Surf's Up".

The domain used to promote the movie is SurfsUp.com. When I first saw the previews I thought it must have been an aftermarket purchase. It's a Sony pictures movie and Sony has been known to use the format sony.com/moviename

SurfsUp.com WHOIS:

Registrant:
SPDE Domain Names Inc.

Domain Name: surfsup.com

Registrar Name: Markmonitor.com
Registrar Whois: whois.markmonitor.com

Administrative Contact:
Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

Created on..............: 1995-Mar-20.
Expires on..............: 2008-Mar-21.
Record last updated on..: 2006-Dec-30

Maybe someone can pull up the WHOIS history of this name and see if Sony did buy it aftermarket. If so, hopefully the rest of Hollywood will realize the value of a short, easy to remember & spell name instead of a hyphenated or /moviedirectory.

HSX.com <--- Found some "future releases" (Sometimes with tentative names) with variations not yet registered.

Caveat emptor - something disclaimerish this way comes!
<Not suggesting you register movie names - I can think of faster ways to get your first C&D>

Not all movie domains need movie or themovie, there are probably some non tm'd words you could register ahead of time with inside knowledge to whats coming out. I have seen actors talk about "I'm shooting a movie right now with so and so called (whatever)" and this is where a little luck could come into play if you paid attention to interviews on extra and the tonight shows etc.

Even then though they could still get around you.

I mean if I registered Name.com they could easily register NameMovie.com. So, you'd have to register at least 4 domains . . . and the movie could be a total flop.

Does anyone have any history on selling movie name domains.
