I do not base any decisions on PR nor do I even care to have it or not - but it would be nice to figure out how it is assigned! I have had a domain parked at parked.com for about a year. Gets no traffic, has no backlinks and is now PR3! My active sites with hundreds of backlinks can barely touch PR1...

I had PR 5 domain name back in 2005. Don't know it wasn't even registered previously.

I also didn't made any backlinks for it.

I've got a two page website with a pr four and it only has three backlinks from my own pr3 directories - one of which is on the same server and ip. It gets about 40 visitors a day. Yet I have a pr 1 website with hundreds of quality backlinks and no matter what I do it stays a pr 1 but gets 180,000+ visitors a month from google and has extended listings for multiple keywords. This is why I really don't care what pr google assigns anymore via the toolbar. It really doesn't seem to manner anymore.

Quality original content trumps pr any day imo.

I have a site with 10+K backlinks. Some backlinks are from PR4+ pages. That site is PR2, and one other site had 500 or so backlinks, and it has the same PR.

Not sure what Google consider while assigning PR.

Its really strange I never heard a parked site got a pr. Can you show your that site ? I want to dig out why and how this happened.
for good Pr, back links is damn Important, Traffic matters but not much. I have pr1-pr3 on my most of sites :) But never ever think that a parked domain can have PR3.. :(

I can help anyone out here with Page Rank questions. I have been an SEO for 5 years

PR for expired domains is tricky territory. Yes its possible to have high PR and low traffic and low PR and high traffic. Google does a crazy dance to keep SEOs guessing at all times.
If you have site that is ranking very well and has lots of backlinks but has a low PR this means the site's PR has been penalized. The penalty will not affect the traffic or rankings, it may affect the site's ability to pass link juice (or it may not) Its a kind of shot across the bow penalty that was likely a result of some practice that is not really that bad in Google's eyes.

The only reason I can think that a domain with zero backlinks would have PR is if it's seen as being associated with some other domain. For example, a subdomain. But who knows...Google's secrecy will keep us all guessing.

pagerank is all about the links.

my guess is that you actually have backlinks but don't know it.

It's weird that you have a PR3 even though you say you get no traffic or back links, have you tried searching for back links or do you just assume you have no back links?
