I can't believe it's only been two months since I first posted this thread. I now get the kinds of mails described there on a more or less daily basis ... particularly bad today because I have -- in the last four hours -- received four separate mails from separate parties about the same domain they want to "help" me obtain (it's the dropping .com variant of a .net domain that I own.) Which sadly suggests to me out there that someone is selling this moronic idea as a system ... and even more sad, that someone out there is buying into it.

I get those same emails too, and I always just laugh and delete...

Go for it. Meanwhile I registered that domain myself. I know I was taking a huge risk, not using the help of an expert, but I'm kind of an adrenalin junkie. my few .info names gets that type of backorder emails and i usually reply "thanks for contacting currently i am busy will contact you back within 4-5 years" :D

I get similar emails advising me to grab the .net for .com's I own. why I would want the .net is beyond me.
