The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.US domains.US domains
For the first batch:
Best to worst: name.com, name.us, name.com.us
For the second batch:
all equal but when .com is available it is preferred.

.com.us - does that even exist? There are none indexed. Zero. There's .us.com - there are about 600K pages indexed from that extension, they all look like spam.

The others: Directly? None at all, except they will assume that your .us site is intended for a US audience and treated accordingly.

It can be either .us or .us.com, .com.us is not in use.

I’ve never heard of a “.com.us”. That being said search engines would prefer the .com first, then the .us and then the .com.us (if it exists).

For your second batch .com would be first but when it comes to the .net and the .org I’m not sure what one it would lend its preference to. I’ve ranked many .net’s and .org’s and if I’m honest, I can’t really see a difference so going with either one probably won’t matter.

search engines are not human, therefore they cannot have preferences :)

content is the key to acceptability

imo....

@biggie – From my past experience it does seem that search engines do have some level of preference for certain domain extensions. I’m not 100% sure why it’s like this but I think it might have to do with Google trying to prevent domains that have been abused by spammers.

For example, if I remember correctly back in the day spammers use to use .info’s as they were much cheaper than .com, .net or .org and because of that Google started to not give as much preference over to .info’s.

It’s just like EMD – back in the day they had a huge advantage over other domains that weren’t EMD but today they don’t have anywhere near as much extra power since the guys at Google realized that just because a domain has the exact keywords as the keyword it’s trying to rank for doesn’t mean that it’s guaranteed to have solid content.

at one time, you could reg .info for free

emds' value, lies in type-in traffic

then too, back in the day.....google didn't have google in all the cctld's either

now that they do, then you can rank for a cctld in google's SE, with that extension.

so instead of an SE having a preference, now they've enabled SE's in practically all the dots.

and within that, the preference, if you will, is still about content.

imo....

Google doesn't give preference a .com over a .net or .org. (They are on record as saying that but I'm too lazy to look for the video) And I personally have a .info that ranks on page 1 for hundreds of keywords. Country preference to the cctlds which aren't reclassified as "general use."

People have a preference. The way people interact (or not) with your site when it appears in search results is a factor.

Links still matter too.

content is the key to acceptability

That and the rest of the hundreds of factors that make up the secret sauce :) ...

"Preference" goes as much as search engines focusing on relevance and sometimes the domain extension can contribute to that. If you have a great informational website with a lot of useful content, then having it on a .info will not be a harm, on the contrary, it can be a good additional help. Same is with .org for non-profit organizations, ccTLDs for pages targeting certain local audiences etc.
