Microsoft is now an accredited domain registrar: itworld.com

Last week, the company was added to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) list of accredited domain name registrars, according to domain name service provider Dot and Co. This means that Microsoft can now add new top-level domains to the databases used by computers on the Internet.

the article speculates that microsoft will use this new power only for Office Live users and not to get into the registrar business. I'm not familiar with office live, what is it?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Office Live is the next Generation of Office, basically the MSNMessenger > Windows Live Messenger upgrade for the office suite. They do offer business service type stuff, like free domains to Office Live users, and webpage maker type software, so this is an obvious step.

but it would be fun to see Microsoft in real registrar business :D

TBH with the amount of domains they must own, they would be fools not to become icann accredited. AFAIK Google is also an accredited registrar.

It makes it cheaper for them to manage their domains i suppose :)

Microsoft seemingly just had a representative join DNF this week as well...also only a couple days ago DNF stated no more TM domains are allowed for sale. They could all be related of course.

IMO the main reason for both MS and Google to become accredited ICANN registrars is to gain unrestricted access to WhoIs records and use that for their SEARCH ENGINES.
Possible uses:

- they will easily see if two (or more) cross-linked sites belong to the same person/company and incorporate that into their respective ranking algos;
- when domains change hands, the ranks will be adjusted;
- domain age/history will be easily determined as well.

Interesting - but Im not sure I like where this is heading. Feeling a little too "Big Brotherish".

Interesting....this could cripple sites like myspace. If MS could integrate a PC into a personal server for everyone...then sites like youtube and even myspace can become worthless. People will just add their own profile, pics, and videos on their own puters...why upload?

Awesome idea there ... the future can only get crazier.

It's a shame many people will likely not bother reading the fine prints should
they bite Office Live's free domains offer.

Blake Ross is working on something VERY similar called Parakey. MS must've got wind of it. Parakey and the MS thing may indeed be the end of MySpace unless they follow suit. Here's the link...

Well there goes our social networking sites :p Although there will be sites that tap into this feature MS are putting in i guess... However for their computers to act like servers they would have to be on 24/7 :/

A large percentage of IPS's actually have clauses that prohibit running a web server from a cable modem or DSL account. Could be some future conflict here.

If this is the case, I wonder how much money was involved in that deal. Usually people just don't bow to that without being compensated.

I can see this for Google for the most part, but as for MS, not so much. I believe that it will play a small factor, but primarily the following:

Think about the security risks involved in this...

This could actually put domain names at a premium price, since there is a highhhhh demand. NP'ers, start reggingggggggg
