Thanks for the heads up about that forum. I've only posted at treasurenet.com.
Prospecting with a metal detector reminds me of domaining - a small investment could yield a big return almost overnight.
Prospecting, like domaining, can be exciting and fun. I remember when there were big forest fires in Angeles National Forest a few years ago. I didn't want to waste my trip to L.A. so I tried to find an unaffected area. I thought that I had found one so I turned on my detector and within 15 minutes I got a good solid gold reading. Before I could dig, however, the air started getting smokey and I could see fires popping up nearby. It was also hot and windy. I tried to dig but was compelled to leave.
Months later, I decided to take another trip down there but discovered that the area was now inaccessible. I then drove to another site where I had found ore loaded with pieces of chicklet gum-sized ore years ago. I also found that area to be inaccessible. It had burned out, washed out, and there were house-sized boulders sitting sitting like ducks above on the hills paralleling the entire pathway to the site. Can you imagine those boulders slipping loose and rolling down the mountainside towards me. Leave the gold...run...take the gold...run...leave the gold... Ever have gold fever?
All in all, metal detecting is fun, but don't expect to get rich doing it. But if you want the best shot at getting rich, you should buy the very best detector because if gold is there, you will find it with one of these tech marvels. I am salivating at the thought of that Vision detector.
Now I could make an argument that prospecting might not be such a bad idea during these hard economic times, especially with gold prices being at their highest ever. Anyone have a pack mule I can borrow?
Speaking of fortunes, years ago I read a treasure story about gold-laden areas being found and then lost. The old book described this one particular area and landmarks of sorts. Funny thing, I used google earth to look for the area and I found four of the four major landmarks the book described in the region that the gold is supposed to be in.
I thought about going there, but it is in the kind of wilderness area you could die in. I think I'd have to hire guides and be helicoptered in. Too many witnesses.
