Bob Quinn, senior principal of the limestone importer, initially considered altering the company's name to fit a domain name with a dot-com extension. But he said a dot-us extension would distinguish HR Stone as an American business while allowing it to keep its name intact. Quinn settled on "hrstone.us."
HR Stone, which emplots six, has plenty of company as small- and midsize businesses increasingly turning to dot-biz, dot-us and dot-info extensions to offset the shortage of dot-coms, industry observers said. And for a businessman like Quinn, dot-us provided his 1-year-old company with a way to the web.
"We just thought it would be good branding for us," he said. "We're in a niche market anyway, so if someone Googled 'U.S.' and 'limestone,' they'll find us."
