Hi,

I have had my website CampusGrind.com (www.campusgrind.com ) online for a little over a year now. My partner and I have been working on the website for about 2 years now.

This is what we have tried to do to market the website:

1. Adding site to a bunch of directories on the web
2. Passing out fliers on campuses and putting them up all over schools.

We don't have any money to market the site since we are broke college students.

Does anyone know of any good marketing techniques for a website like CampusGrind.com that would be real cheap to do or even possibly free.

Thank you,
Greg

Some more ideas.

First of all, although search engines probably wont bring you as much traffic since college kids are not quite as likely to search google for books...

But here are some OVT monthly results
93469 college textbook
21616 used college textbook
17510 cheap college textbook
10436 college apparel
5574 college sport merchandise
-------

Your title needs work.

Currently:
CampusGrind dot Com - Campuses Together as One *where are your keywords?

Optmized for keywords:
CampusGrind - Used Cheap College Textbooks, Apparel, Merchandise

Your link exchanges or link listings should use anchor text keywords aswell, something like the following code:
CampusGrind - Used Cheap College Textbooks - Description goes here...

If you dont already have a link exchange manager use: http://www.MyLinking.com

Almost all large universities have news papers. You can usually advertise in these newspapers for fairly cheap. ex The Recorder:

Have you hit up the dorms/student housing bulletin boards? The timing is a bit late for this semester but you could try flyers directly to houses/mailboxes in the area a month or two before the next semester begins. This will give people enough time to get books from and most will already know what classes they are taking for next semester. They will also have all of winter break to look it over. What color flyers? Yellow on Black seems to work best at getting people's attention. What is on your flyer? Is it straight to the point or is it a hard read? Can you post your flyer here?
--------------------
Dont give up, once the word starts spreading this is when things will take off.

It may be a long shot, but you could try talking to local businesses and putting coupons on your flyers so people dont just throw them away. Then you will do the job of handing out not only your flyer but business ads, etc...

Sneak some flyers into the library study areas, worst thing that will happen is library workers will throw them away, dont put too many, you dont want to lose too many.

Just some things I would do if I was you :)

your flyer needs work.

Your flyer needs work. College students dont like to read...

Leave the campus grind logo at the top, move the girl reading the book to the side, and throw a catchy slogan or something that gets peoples attention and interests them. In quotes put across somewhere where it is easily seen something along the lines of "Because you should be buying for the prices they buy back..." etc.. You can get creative with it, but make sure it would make you "side" with the college student, since they all hate the campus bookstores.

Then move all the ready facts to the bottom, so once they are interested they can hear all the good stuff...

Since you said you dont have a budget, I would make the whole flyer black and white and like I said, yellow paper is important. Copies can be expensive too so try to sneak some out of your library or computer lab or something. Of course dont break the law but, its around $100 for 1500 copies B/W, but a few in the library, a few in the comp labs, and you save a few hundred dollars..

Another good way to increase your search engine rankings is to distribute some articles to sites like goarticles.com or ezinesubmitter. I don't have a list in front of me, but search this site and you should find a few threads with some good recommendations. It's a good way to get some quick (and free) publicity and backlinks.

I saw somone do this today, its really a great idea. They used chalk on the dorm sidewalks and entrance areas and put their website address and a "slogan" representing their website, etc.. Of course now would not be the best time to do it, and if you get snow (near next semester) it may not be as effective just cause it will wipe off when it gets plowed.

Either way, this would be a good thing to do when it gets close to the time to buy books again and such if you can pull it off. The whole ad was probably about 20 feet long and 3-4 feet wide, so maybe practice somewhere where you wont be seen so you dont screw it up infront of the dorms and people :)
