Mark Zuckerberg's old domain being auctioned on Flippa

Fellow members,

It's as crazy as it gets and I envy the drop catcher. Apparently, they mentioned the domain in the new movie "Social Network"...

It's one of the oldest projects handled by Zuckerberg and is currently being auctioned at Flippa. The first time I came across the domain was in Wikipedia...you can only imagine the amount of solid back links the domain currently has and the typeins it's been getting since the name was mentioned in the movie(...)

Personally, I'd really need to see traffic stats. I have the feeling this domain would lose type-ins etc after a sort while (once the movies hits video). It doesn't seem worth it to me but I can understand the market bloating the selling price to unrealistic proportions. Auctions are like that.

A name with 0 PR is not very impressive. facemash.com with and without www has less than 200 inbound links, which is really absurd. Having read OP's post I was expecting at least 200 million links. Yes the name is brandable but the bidding price is ridiculous.

I have the same feeling. The typins will decrease overtime but the back links will remain. It's being mentioned every time one looks up for info on FaceBook or Zuckerberg. The amount of back links the domain currently has is striking. Getting free back links from a high traffic page on Wikipedia and all those news sites and archives dont come by easy.

You're right. 200 inbounds aint a lot. However, PR doesn't realy mean much these days and Google themselves are taking the initiative of devaluating it. It's a monster that generates revenues for crappy sites. It's well known that PR can be gamed and it's unfortunate! I believe domain, content and age are more important than manipulable metrics. Same goes for Alexa.

I believe in the quality of inbound links. Facemash has quite a few and the current PR I am certain is due to the lack of content. Had the site been developed with a steady flow of traffic and content; the statistics would have been better and I hope the buyer will keep that in mind.

Yeah, the backlinks will hold up on this domain. Who ever develop this domain and market it properly will make a killing just as long it doesn't compete with FB.

I hope the person who buys the domain name get it for a good deal, because I highly doubt he/she will profit off of it. Because it is Zuckerburg's old domain it will always be known as just that. If you are to use that domain for anything but what pertains to Facebook/Social Network, i can guarantee the site will be a flop.

I'm by nature skeptical and this morning I happened to think what if Zuckerberg's company is the highest bidder on Flippa. Let's hope its not and your question about the future use for this domain is noteworthy! The name is confusingly similar to Facebook and is linked to Zuckerberg in its use. Zuckerberg, if there is a litigation, would probably have good grounds to have the domain transferred to him!

Can the new owner of this domain build a descent website, promote it on Facebook to obtain traffic, and use reference from the "Social Network" movie as well as the name of the previous owner(Zuckerburg)?

Time to market this domain sale as fast as possible while the topic is still hot to gain maximum amount of revenue. Though I wouldn't expect to see it go for more than low to mid xx,xxx, its purely a vanity domain name at this point.

Exactly my thought too, I suppose it could be used as a cosmetics site but aren't there enough of them already?
