Making your own domain extension?

On the website.ws website, they say that they saw a window of oppourtunity about their .ws website extension... is it actually possible to get YOUR OWN domain extension?

i dont think you can buy your own bit after the . but there are that many out their it sould be possible to get something unique to you

You can apply to sponsor a tld, the cost to even be considered is in the 40K range.
