The recent developments involving Google "threatening to pull out" like Washington Post put it, underscore the dangers for IDNs. IDNs are of course a good investment, but many factors will play a role here and I think a major one is a friendliness of the target market.

What on earth has Google threatening to pull out of China have to do with IDN's;?

Well, I think Google is pulling out because Chinese are filtering out their search in favor of Baidu. Google is trying to put on a brave face and is claming some "free speach" abuses- this is not fooling anybody, just look at Baidu stock. This is clear protectionism but this is how Chinese chose to act. I am not discussing if they are right or wrong in helping Baidu. Implications for chinese idn? China may try to make sure only .cn is used within China and that extension they control. Can it be? They certainly can do it technically. Politically they seem to have no problem with doing it either. So the lesson for idn holders? Make sure that your idn end user is a friendly country if you get .com, otherwise chose cc extension.

I don't think you know what your talking about, "Google Busted".

The Chinese government will be the loser, they already lack credibility.

They will never control the Internet, they may try to control the Internet in China, but that just shows how backward they really are. I'm interested to see if we get the usual overreaction from the Chinese when they "lose face", i expect so.

Good move by Google to distance themselves from a "control freak" government. Google stock "rolled over" a few days ago, and this could even be a grab for high moral ground by Google to stem further loss of market share and revenue going forward.

I'm not the biggest fan of Google, but kudos to them this time. This article sums up the situation IMO, What Google's Threat to Pull Out of China Really Means -- Seeking Alpha

You have the right to have your opinion as do I.

I think you don't exactly fully understand what IDNs exactly are. The situation with Google has nothing to do with IDNs, which are just normal domains in general.

Hell, if you want to target China, the first thought is to go with .CN. With IDNs, you can go with .com/.net (Chinese.COM/NET) and not have to worry about getting your domain taken away by CNNIC, which, IMO, actually STRENGTHENS Chinese IDNs. Throwing the word "IDNs" around in this context makes absolutely no sense when bashing it as a whole.
