Hello,

I want to put System of a Down lyrics on my fan website but I'm worried i'll get into trouble for it.

How would I gain permission to put these lyrics on the website? The record company doesn't currently have a website (http://www.americanrecordings.com) so I can't find a WORKING telephone number and I really want to get these lyrics on the site ASAP.

Please help!

Lewis

No luck calling drectory assistance, huh? You may need to write to them. It's very strange that there is no way to contact them. I'll bet Tom Petty has their number.

Did you try for an e-mail catch-all?

I don't live in USA so getting in contact with them is 100x harder for me, a UK guy...

I'm a recording artist and yes... getting permission is advisable. I used to know one of the members (Shavo). I think they are all still living in L.A? They are on the Columbia label I think. Check their myspace page...

Good luck:)

As far as I am aware American Recordings do not own the rights to the System Of A Down songs. The person who owns the rights is the person who wrote the song (can't remember if it is Serj Tankian or Daron Malakian who writes most of their stuff).

You could try contacting someone on their web site. They do have the lyrics on the site so they are publicly available so I should imagine they would grant permission (providing your site is not trying to profit from their listing).

Damn you're sooo lucky!!! I'd kill to know one of the members!

Yeah, they're on Columbia...I sent an email yesterday regarding this situation and they haven't responded yet so hopefully that won't be too long. :)

I have all of the lyrics ready to go. Just dying for the thumbs-up.

Peter: Serj and Daron write the lyrics. I woudn't have the slightest clue as to how i'd contact them but i'll wait on Columbia. I don't know what else I should do?

I won't get permission...?

So you're telling me that there's websites like soadfans.com and systemofadownonline.com both breaking the law yet soadfans.com is KNOWN by the band and their record company.

And about them sucking, they went through a few months of sucking because they were on tour for too long.

Had a look on their website and there does not seem to be any contact details. I presume they do not post on the forum (never actually read it)

An alternative is to try and contact :-

David Benveniste, Velvet Hammer Mgmt (as address is in the whois)

I presume this is the bands management. If that is the case then they would have direct access to the band. Management companies usually screen and pass on correspondents from fans. How long it will take to get an answer is another matter however and depends on the band.

That is actually a distinct possibility. If they have not sought permission then they are breaking the law, it could be the case that the band have decided not to pursue it at this time.

You do make a fair point there, Peter.

They're busy with their new bands at the minute so i'm guessing it could take a while but I don't mind. I just want the goahead...and to be safe.

I also phoned SonyBMG but the legal department was out of occide so they're going to email/ring me back about it.
