Losing your domain during checkout...

So I took your advice on not hand regging new domains and instead looking into the aftermarket.

So I've tried to hand reg some existing domains during the drop. Yesterday it worked fine and I got a couple of domains I wanted, and today I was thrilled when giftbonus.com was available about half an hour after the drop began, so I put it in the cart. However, during checkout I started messing about looking for Afternic's name servers instead of just using the registrar's. And then when I had paid I received an error message from my registrar informing me that giftbonus.com had been registered by someone else. That someone else turned out to be Domain Asset Holdings LLC, which I assume is a big fish. Dang, the thought that I had it in my cart... all of a sudden it appears so attractive...

Anybody more experienced wants to cheer me up and tell me it's actually a crap domain?

My personal rule of thumb is, if it is good enough for you to want it, odds are someone else will too.

If you were doing this at GoDaddy, you do realize that their whois is not in real-time. So the domain may already have been taken.

It is as stub said. This has happened to me a couple times. In addition your chances of catching a good drop via handreg are slim to none, closer to none. Backorders

I was doing it at LuckyRegister, which is a cheaper GoDaddy clone. I assume it works exactly the same way.

No, I did not realise that. Any idea how big the delay is?

Yeah, I am thinking that the only domains I can catch are those that nobody has backordered, so I am only competing against other hand-reggers like myself. But I guess the more I learn about domains the more I will zoom in on those that everybody else wants.

LuckyRegister.com is a GoDaddy Reseller. So yes, it would work the same. I've no real idea about the delay but 24hrs already screws you up. You are much better off checking the domains at the Registry Whois.
