Hi all,
I want to start my own web design business. There are some questions that are luring in my mind. I do have one or two clients to get started but how can I get more and spread my work to masses? How do I start designing for people? Do I need a site that displays my work, etc?

yes first create a site for you and put some sample work there. You can promote your service in forums.

yes you need a domain and a site to showcase your portfolio at first create as many reasonable templates that you can sell on it. then when they see your design, word of mouth takes in, also if learn wordpress theme designing it will promote you for free since people will download your wordpress templates with your link on it.

keep a blog as well to update your visitors easily.

First step is to design a decent site of yours.

That will speak more to your prospects rather than explaining them in words.

Then initially just start with the people available in u r hand .
(1 or 2 u mentioned in u r post).

Tell everyone around u that u r a potential web designer.

As mentioned by weblord , Word of mouth is the power marketing weapon.

Wish u all the success Jesmit..

first create an identity buy a domain to put you portfolio on and create freebies with your link on the bottom and such that helps to spread the word pretty good. write articles on web design and such and enter design contests there are many sites that allow for this... Here on namepros.com clantemplates.com there are many its not the bigger your portfolio but the quality of the items in the portfolio

As internet business is growing day by day, web designing is buzzing high. As far as getting started and getting more clients is concerned, the best way I have learned is through word of mouth, and also through online. First of all you should settle on a name for your business and design/build a simple portfolio site to showcase your work. More you expose your good work more there are chances to get clients. Starting a web design business comprises a lot of things, so before getting started make sure you are all equipped to get into it.

Remember to keep up to date with your work and save all important stages in your progress: it helped me a lot.

I would personally recommend not getting a website until you're well established with more than two clients. At the very least request that they pass around your link/name.
