I'm new to domaining, but I can see how profitable it can be if you know what you're doing. I've bought a few good domains such as aquire.org, fritolaycoupons.com, and others. I'm starting to catch on, and I'm am an extremely fast learner. I just need someone to teach me.

So, if any of the domaining vets are interested, please let me know, and at what cost. I'm a little low on funds right now, but have been doing web design for over three years so perhaps we could barter. Unless you'd like to coach me for free. :D

You have something good going for you already: web dev/design experience. An effective strategy increasing the value of a portfolio is to add websites to domains. Specific tactics vary, from hollow affiliate parking sites to simple services, but they all require developers/designers. The quality of your domains doesn't matter quite as much if you can get traffic, so you can invest less money and more time. That can be useful, especially when you're starting out and don't have much in the way of funds.

Seeing that you're registering obvious TM-infringing domain names e.g. fritolaycoupons dot com, I'd find that mentor right quick!

You can start off here for some motivation. Once you have digested all this, ask on this thread again. Will point out the actual tools. :)

First, read all about these domain legends:

Read everything except the book. But these guys seemed to have gotten in a lot earlier than now. So can you still make the amount of money they do being this late in the game? What types of tools do they use to find these names?

I've been reading up on "drop catching" as well. Are there any tools or secrets of the trade to cash in on good domains?

IMO things have changed a lot in the last years and many more changes will occur in the next few years.
In the nineties you could register amazing dictionary words for nothing, hold on to them for a while and find yourself a millionaire all of a sudden.
Then the era of adsense and micro crappy websites came in : everyone was registering EMDs to put up a 5 page website with some horrible content and making money with google. But google has been coming like a wrecking ball on those websites lately; so the value of those EMDs is slowly fading. There is an army of old fashioned domainers who will tell you it's not true but in my view is totally happening.
Beside this, the type of buyers has been changing : to start with it was all about English major corporations ( like those who bought diamond.com and that kind of names ) then other countries with other languages came in together with small and medium businesses wanting to increase their presence online.
All this change started some years ago but we are still at the beginning of the bell curve and that's why the old school will tell you that EMDs are the best and always be; or maybe because that's the only internet they know..
IMO brandables ( not the crappy ones obviously - btw for those who will click on my link to see if they can find a way to criticize my work yes... be happy ...I have some crappy ones too..I am not perfect! ) and the new " 2 word brandables " are the best investment ever together with new trends but that means being ready to spend a fortune with a return that can be zero.

Well, now is the time to book some of the new gTLDs which are releasing right now and will keep on doing so for next 1-2 year. 1 Diamond is better than 10 pearls. All the hefty premium being paid for .COM domains will wade away slowly with time when better domains are available in short and generic new gTLDs like .Guru .Web etc.

Yes, you can backorder (always at all three main - Namejet, Snapnames, Backorderzone) but then there are auctions for valuable domains and auctioneers bid up prices way too high for you to be profitable. But now is time to grab the very best of new gTLD domains.

Now, since .GURU domains have become General Availability, look if you can book some single-keyword, generic, universal & highly commercial domain in .GURU extension, eg,

Insurance.Guru
Fitness.Guru
Yoga.Guru
Trip.Guru
Travel.Guru
Mortgage.Guru
Loans.Guru
CarInsurance.Guru
NewYork.Guru
America.Guru
India.Guru
Jobs.Guru

Avoid TWO-KEYWORD domains in these extensions for now, unless its very premium keyword combo like "CarInsurance". The domains above are probably all snapped up early in all likelihood but there are several other generic commercial keywords that you can focus on. If you don't find anything valuable remaining in .GURU gTLDs, then focus on upcoming gTLDs like .Shop, .Store etc.

2-3 years down the line, these few domains would pay you back a LOT. For the moment, forget .Net/.Org/.Info completely.

Drop the Fritolaycoupons.com domain name ASAP.

Listen to every video on Domainsherpa.com. Sign up for their emails and you will get two emails/week, one where the domains sherpas appraise investor portfolios. You learn what is good and why, the other are interviews with the most successful domainers. You learn what they say and you will be ready to buy domains.

After 15 months...still learning! Good Luck!

I've been domaining full time for the past couple of years. And I'm sure that I've fallen into every pitfall there is! So there's no reason you should repeat everybody else's mistakes.

Yoda am I not. And I continue to try things -- which means an ongoing mixture of success and failures. But I know enough to save any domainer money. So I'd be willing to work out some sort of barter, if you're still looking.
