I have had HowToBuyFromChina.com for a long time.

I picked up AMusicalNote.com thinking it would work well for a music teacher.

HockItToMe.com seemed like a natural for a pawn shop, but so far I seem to be the only one who thinks so :)

I think if someone makes it to your site and likes they will add to favorites so the length is then no longer an issue , as stated earlier teaching/study/learning sites always seem to do well

it looks like I am the only one who is not in favor of long tail. It is possible a long tail has some value, but I trust probability, the longer the domain, the lower probability someone would like it.

The guy who had fromragstoriches/com thought that there was soemthing in it , however i must admit that is a great finacial saying i will look out for what's up that in the future

We would love to have riches.com but the above example does suggest people will go for a longer domain if that think brandable for their business

I love long tails but they generally receive very few type ins which means you have to actively market them to sell them. They're also great for development if there is search volume to be captured.

This thread is mixing up "long tail" and just "long" domain names. Long tail refers to the search prospects for a name. If ereaders is the keyword, maybe "kindle ereader discount" would be a long tail search term. Long tail is a way of targeting very refined pockets of search.

With that out of the way, longtail keyword domains, are very good at targeting small pockets of search, but not good for building out a large site.

Long domains, on the other hand, I think can be very good. I think length is less of an issue than memorability, and many long phrases are highly memorable as they are.

I had a buyer come back about eatingtoloseweight.com with an objection about length. That makes no sense to me. It's easy to remember, and by that flawed logic, etlw.com would be a better name.

I even wonder if there are disadvantages when speaking the name into search. If I mispronounce "lose" for example, the search engine may return words such as loose, ruse, lew's, lowe's, rose or any number of completely unrelated searches.
On the other hand, if I mispronounce part of "eating to lose weight," the search engine still have enough there to make sense of what I might be trying to say. The longer phrase provides context.

2-3 keywords max... Everything else is pretty much worthless if in other gTLD's :)

I think long tail domains is very useful if you are targeting local market or specific product. It doesn't give me much important because i am looking for global customers.

some good discussion, i was very surprised to find nearly what i considered to be common phrases were already gone, and also there some variations that i was not quite away of so that makes it a no go it there is uncertainty but a well phrase in the .com can't be such a bad thing can it?

When developing why have some pages reverting back to the shorter search term page titles .....does make sense ?

Actually I have a domain doing that now and the only reason I chose to develop on the shorter name is because it was less keystrokes and for the target audience I'm after less is more.

Not sure how well it will work out in the end but I'll see towards the end of this year.
