(just got my christmas present early)
Here are a couple of observations:
1. The mobile web is in dire need of good content. I thought I would be interested in the news sites, but when you have to scroll down for each line, it kind of sucks.... Nonetheless, I will get used to it. I'd rather have news available to me this way, then to not have anything at all when I'm out and about.
2. Cell phones screens aren't big enough for "rich media content" sites. Plain and simple. It isn't going to work. This is where dot .mobi could really step up to the plate. The .mobi "platform" seems to favor "not-so-rich-content" type sites which do better on these screens.
3. I use Google 24/7 on my PC, but after visiting the site tonight, I will be in search of a good mobile search engine. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the way the "results" are presented are all wrong.... Me thinks there could be room for more Mobi Search Engines
4. The mobi extension wasn't hard at all to type in. Heads up though. If you are going to get a .mobi name, get short names. This reinforces what I thought when I first purchased names on September 26, 2006.
5. I finally realized that .com or .mobi or .tv, it really doesn't matter. What matters to people logging on to the mobile web is "logical mobile content". The time they will spend on your site if it immediately doesn't do anything will probably be counted in nano-seconds. If you are building more news sites, I'd lay off. One needs to really think outside the box here on mobile content. It's more important than I originally thought. I made the mistake of thinking "form" is the most important, but to me it's not. Content, Content, Content---that does something.
6. Where .mobi is going to have an edge (if mtld can "excite" the base) is that one will automatically link it will .mobile content. If they see it on a billboard, they probably will go to the site, as opposed to if they saw a .com. The reason for this is that most .com sites look like crap or cannot be seen. Most veteran mobile users know this.... So if I were PINKY (hope your reading this) I would have an AD campaign out there promoting the "benefits" of visiting .mobi sites. They cannot do this now. We just don't have enough sites up. However I would say that once you reach a 1000 sites, then I say go for it.
7. I think mTLD should have a top 1000 .mobi members club. I think we should have to pay to get into this club. You should also have a .mobi site that does something. Those who have a 1000 .mobi members SEAL on their site will carry with it some status. In creating a "special" club, that is exclusive, it will spur a few of us developers into action. Once the club is full, then it would be sealed off. The only way in is if a founding member sold off their "share". I would liken this club to the "DOW Industrial" which has a 100 companies represented. Every new company hopes to get listed on the DOW someday... This in my opinion WOULD spur development, like nothing else.
8. It was interesting to say the least. Not quite the experience I had back in 1994 when I logged onto the internet for the first time. The mobile web is what I would consider in "tough" shape...almost like it's 1990, instead of 2006. This is good, because it means that everyone of you has a chance to shape this new "platform"....
