Someone asked me to explain how I filter certain letters out from a list of available domains.

I use the "COUNTIF" function in Excel. That puts a 1 into the cell if another cell contains a certain character or string, or a 0 if it doesn't.

Here is an example:

In my spreadsheet, I put all the domain names (without extension) into column A. Cell B1 looks like this:

=COUNTIF(A1,"*G*")

If the domain name in cell A1 contains any G's, then cell B1 will show a 1; if not, then B1 will show a 0.

In each row, I make one cell like that for each letter I want to eliminate (BCDFGH, in this case). Then, after all of those cells, I make one final cell that just adds up the contents of those cells.

If the final cell is 0, that means that the domain name at the start of that row contains no BCDFGH letters. A quick sort places all such domain names at the top of the spreadsheet.

I use simple grep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grep) and wc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wc_(Unix))
and a simple Perl script to check domain availability to whois.crsnic.net
