I appreciate likes more, purely because they show next to my avatar when posting, whereas thanks don't.

I think that "thanks" are added to "likes" for that purpose, and the number shown is their sum. Can anybody confirm that?

Can confirm, yes, Likes and Thanks are added together for that stat. Just tested it on your post.
