Yesterday I launched a new site on a new domain.

Last night, less than 12 hours after I put up the site, I searched google for my keywords.

And wow....number 9 in the rankings out of over 39 million results!

All I did was announce the new site on 5 forums.

No other advertising so far.

Site is: http://www.featuredlinks.net

Keywords: featured links

PS...now I am number 8!

There are the keywords in the domain name itself that is the benefit of it, I think.

Yes it is a common scenario with keywords in domain names.

I think now you should also go for secondary keywords.

For example I do have some domains similarly like this.

Results 1 - 10 of about 6,330,000 for shopper sale - http://www.shoppersale.com
Results 1 - 10 of about 9,110,000 for fire scripts - http://www.firescripts.com
Results 1 - 10 of about 320,000 for gamer kit - http://www.gamerkit.com
Results 1 - 10 of about 36,500,000 for only travels - http://www.onlytravels.com

I am not so good at maths so don't know how many million or thousand it is. But Yet I am trying to go after other keywords with the optimization to get traffic from other sources too.

The keywords in your domain will definitely help you rank very well for them but most of the times they are not searched if the domain itself is not a perfect match for the combination of those keywords. And as we all know that kind of domains are always highly priced. So best thing would be to let it ride for its keywords wherever it wants to go, on the 1st or 2nd page but also target the keywords relevant to the content on your site.

Thanks.

-Nick-,

Are you talking about "the long tail"?

Could you help us to understand how that works?

Thanks,
Cy

No kenny not just long tail ones but even premium ones could be targeted alongside.

But as you have mentioned longtail ones I will try to say whatever I could in some words over here.

1) Find the best niche for your site. If you have a domain that matches some niche then go for it. Otherwise brandable ones can be in any niche.
2) After you have found that niche. Go to wordtracker or adsense keyword tool. Find relevant keywords for that main keyword that is your niche.
3) Make a list of all those long tail ones that you find upon your search and make a small notepad or something on your desktop or your site folder.
4) Mixing up the niche and the long tail both now....... Put the main niche keywords in the title, meta tags content and footer. Don't worry about long tail ones right now. So we are able to give enough weight to the main premium keyword.
5) Open that notepad of long tail keywords. Select 2 or 3 from it and write an article around it and use those long tail keywords in it. Use this article on your blog or the content of your site. Do this till you are over with all those long tail ones.
6) Whichever keywords are already used just put a small dash or some marking that they are already used in articles. To save you from trouble of double efforts.
7) Let it roll for somedays... do basic blah blah like sitemap, seo friendly URL's, backlinks etc.
8) Go to search engine after somedays and check where you are for those long tail ones. If you are not at good position get backlinks with long tail keywords in its anchor text. You will see the movement.
9) Now after you are satisfied with placement of your site for some long tail keywords. Mark them as done and when in end you are left out with just some of them not performing well enough. Write 3 more articles using those keywords and get backlinks for them. [use some more keyword weight this time]

Well this is my way of doing it. I don't know if it is correct or not but it works for me till now.

just wanted to give you a heads-up if you find yourself sliding downward. i've seen this happen often. google seems to give you an initial keyword boost and then you start to slowly slide like quicksand to where you should be requiring that you build yourself up in the traditional manner.

I have seen this happened so many times when keyword phrase is not one of those major ones. But the thing is if the domain name is a new one you might find it suddenly sandboxed later.

It is very common to get top rankings for new listed sites. However, rank hopping is also a common thing that will happen to any new website. In a few days time, you will start noticing a drop in rankings and eventually disappear from the results. This effect is what many called "Google Sandbox".

It's 7 on google.com.au.

It's normal. Most of new sites now receive a boost on its ranking to different SE's. But this ranking is just temporary, few weeks later your site will receive it's real serp base on your optimization.
