Sounds legit... doesn't seem like the 'normal' scams that ask you to appraise it or anything.

Opinions?
Thanks.

Doesn't sit right with me. Not saying it is a scam but I would be weary.

So... this guy just wants you to renew it... and that's it? This complete stranger doesn't want you to let a crappy domain drop so he'll give you almost $100 to renew it? It sounds like he's a bored teen who sent similar emails to multiple owners outta boredom. This MIGHT be legit but I see a huge red-flag on this one.

I say scam. His website is under proxy and leads to nowhere.

Tell him to transfer the money and then you do what he asks you to if you're willing to sell. That way you're not in for a loss when renewing the domain.

I don't see why this shouldn't be legit if he's willing to pay upfront.

That's what is curious to me... Paypal can be scammed relatively easily, but afaik WU and wire transfers are more difficult to fake/con. Is this true? What would be the safest way to receive payment in this case? (Assuming it is legit of coarse)

Why is everyone so confused here? The domain is worth more then the offering amount. Had you allowed the domain to expire, it will sell on NameJet for substancially more. So, instead of waiting till it hits NameJet, hes sends an email to you and crosses his fingers.

This domain being regged in 1995, 4 Letter.com with quality lettering. No Scam here, just someone trying to get a great deal.

Perhaps we should renew it and try to sell it? We no longer have any use for it... and our business could use the revenue :p

With a 1995 reg date, definitely renew it. A lot of domainers will pay a premium for the novelty of owning a domain that is so old.

There aren't really any red flags in his email, but since he is from Pakiscam I wouldn't give him your bank info for a wire even if a reputation can be established. Use caution with PayPal of course. WU is safe.

i wouldnt trust it, the start of it sure sounds like a classic scammer.

I would certainly offer a $100 myself for this particular domain name, thanks largely to its age.

I was confused because I never checked a whois. I never checked a whois because I kinda assumed that he would have renewed it if it were so old & that this was likely a new-ish reg.

OP: DON'T SELL IT TO THIS GUY. PERIOD. Renew it and I can almost guarantee you could sell it for $500 or more.

I paid early $xxx for a 1997-registered LLLL.com.

:hi:

The offer was to pay you up front so the Buyer would be taking the risk.

If you select Western Union, you'd physically receive the cash in your hand. :$:

It worth way more than renewal fee or the offered price. So I'd say renew it, at least. Then it's up to you what you'd do with it.

it is NOT a scam...

I do this too along with a lot of other domainers out there.

The object of doing this is to get the name from people who are going to let it expire. Especially good names! The reason we do this is so it won't go to a company like Snap Names, Name Jet, etc...and we may never have a chance of ever being able to get it. Either that or we'll have to pay 10 times as much in an auction because 9 times out of 10 someone else will back order it as well.

So domainers offer a small amount of money to current owners of domains that are about to come up for renewal. It's actually VERY smart. Because in this situation we're only spending around $100 compared to if it were to go to Snap Names we would end up in a bidding war probably paying thousands of dollars.

This is the best way to flip a domain and get rich IMO. But it usually doesn't work if you end up contacting another domainer because they usually won't let a good name drop. The only time it works is when an ordinary Joe owns the domain and doesn't know the actual value of it.

So again, it's not a scam. You can take the money up front and send him the domain...

BUT, I wouldn't because DBSG.com is a quad premium and is definitely worth the renewal costs. You should keep it!

:)

flamewalker, as you can easily assume, the domain worths way more than $80 or $95 or $150 ;) I think the mail is legit, it's a try i've been done twice too, with no success.

My suggestion: renew the domain and, if you don't want to keep it anymore, put for sale here or push to auction with a $60 offer on Sedo.
Besides, you can look for someone that manage a end-user sale.

if the seller can prove ownership i think a little risk is worth taking still. although it may look rather scam-like. renew it at your favorite registrar and possibly park the domain and close a higher priced sale.

Thanks for the input guys. We will definitely take the risk of renewing it, and probably put it up for sale. And, I will thank the domainer that emailed us ;)
