Had the tough conversation with my wife. I’m leaving domaining after several years of spending more than I was making financially I just can’t justify continuing. I know I clearly struggle with bitterness but I appreciate the conversations we had.

To be successful with domains is the same skills to be successful in other ways. It's not easy, but other hobbies cost money and don't offer any ROI. If things aren't working for you, then a break may be necessary.

It's not the domains though, it could be your approach. Assets and investments have a lot of factors that can determine the level of success one might have. Branding may not be your forte.

Sometimes it's good to find a new perspective. Find a hobby that doesn't involve purchases, and see what you can learn from that. Either way, I'm sure you've learned some things from domaining that will help you in other areas of your life. Best of luck on whichever path you end up on (y)

the facts are that the domaining dream was made in the 90s anyways. And then those people that sold their domains for millions waited 10 years at least. Its an up and down field just like any other with the rich elite and poor strugglers. Good luck. There is still something out there for you, no regrets and it will be here if you decide to give it another shot. ty.

I've whittled down considerably. I jumped in the deep end, luckily didn't drown before I could swim. It took time to decide which to keep, the domains I felt have most potential for development, either by me or someone else. I ask myself, would I build on this domain? If not, time to let it go. Then again, I've sold some bizarre names, lol. As for cost of renewal, it's about comfort level and budget IMO. I'd rather have 10 solid, than 100 iffy domains in a portfolio. I understand your situation and wish you the best...from personal experience, I can only suggest one to follow their heart, keep the passion and things will generally work out. God bless.

Cheers :beaver:

Domaining can take time, it took me around 1 to 2 years when I started out in domaining with lots of trials and errors, before I got my first $1,000+ sale. Never give up and keep reading, keep learning, keep trying, but if you are not able to finance it now, then it's good to save your money to provide for your family who comes first.

If you have another stream of income where you can afford to lose money, it would be great to start again. For example: You can also create websites, develop domains, with ad streams, which I've done in the beginning and with that money invest in domain names. But that also takes time, but you won't lose as much money (maybe hand reg + renewal + hosting which is cheaper) and you can always sell the website on Flippa or here on NP and then develop another domain one at a time. But hey anything in business takes time, lots of learning and lots of patience.

Anyways, I wish you all the best and hope you someday come back and be successful with domaining or that you find something else which you like and be successful with too.

People pulling the pin cull them down till you believe in what you have. I can't drop some domains. I could cull a few but that is the game. I feel what i buy new is required or a missed opportunity.

I think oftentimes people spend money on various domains, from which they don't sell one (or just one),
and then think to themselves: Better I invested all that money into just ONE domain, a good .com

As far as I see it here, good domainers are either investing in good .com, or .org / maybe .net &.io,
or specifiying onto one exotic TLD (in rare cases).

This is most likely the only way to go.

A good rule of thumb is like when you walk into a casino. Never spend more than you can afford to lose and still be able to cover your personal bills/overhead when you walk back out.

The last DNJournal.com public sales report released on 16 November 2022 represented the lowest public sales report since 2012.

Being in the early months of a recession is showing all across the economy now. Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and others laying off 10-25% of their workforces just in Q4 2022 alone.

Then you have the crypto winter going into Artic freeze with FTX collapsing over the last week or so. If you are a domain speculator that became over leveraged this year, you could be in deep financial trouble.

I'm not surprised more domain speculators are choosing safer income channels. Then again, I was never a fan of the I have 5K+ domains, but my renewals cost more than they earn yearly crowd. Or the domains-to-crypto cult (where are they now?).

There are always winners and losers when speculative bubbles pop, at least some are smart enough to know when to take their money and go home.

only invest in domains "you just have to have" if you buy a name because 'someone else would love this domain' you are already losing
