I think I know the answer to this question and I'm sure that this surely has been discussed before but I didn't find anything in Search. Is it or is it not a good idea to register a Last Name (dotcom) if it is not your own? I primarily focus on generic domain names and definitely know you don't want to register another person's full name, but what about just a Last Name. I have monitored a name that I saw drop a few years ago and it still remains unregistered. It is a fairly uncommon last name, but is actually searched on quite abit. What is the general consensus on this topic? Thank you.

I should have also mentioned why it is searched on so much since it is uncommon (I assume)...it is the last name of a minor historic person (still living) in a particular field and when searching that last name, the search results are primarily for that person/field.

Last name is valuable than the first name. Because it is family name. Last year I sold 2 last name domain. 2 .Net, one at Afternic $1,000 and other at Sedo $600. They have meaning and I buyed them for this reason. ( 1st name is English, Second Spanish, but buyers 1st from Denmark and 2nd from India, also second surname is containing "s" at the end. Like Johnson > Johnsons )

These prices are high for .net domains. But buyers are easily paying. Maybe they are thinking their childs, family or maybe sacred meaning there.

So my advice is buy meaningful last names. But there is a problem, there are tons of surname and if you make wrong choices, your moneys can go to space. So when you find a surname domain, check other tlds, if 4-5 other tlds taken, buy only .com ,if 8+ tld s taken you can buy .net , more tlds are everytime good for selling time and value. If 15+ tld taken and if you find .com :bingo: , but also check surname, keyword at the Google, how many results there?, if millions there, this is great. :D

many surnames means something else in other languages, maybe they become more valuable.
